Chapter Twenty-Two: The Restroom Ghost
The policewoman turned around, her face as delicate as a melon seed, with long, elegant brows like willow leaves, as if she were a lotus emerging from water. She was the perfect embodiment of the saying: an angelic face and a devilish figure.
At that moment, the extraordinary beauty in uniform looked at Fu Yang and smiled gently, “You are...”
That smile was like the gentle rain of spring, melting Fu Yang’s heart completely.
“My God! Is it possible that there are policewomen this beautiful in the world?” he thought. Of course, he had to admit she was still a bit less dazzling than the tempestuous ghost at home. But this woman was real, tangible—a living person, after all, not a ghost.
It took quite a while for Fu Yang, thoroughly bewitched, to recover his wits. He quickly raised the fruit basket in his hand, “I’ve come to visit Ah Huang.”
The beautiful policewoman giggled, “You mean Master Huang?”
“Hello, hello, my name is Fu Yang. I’ve been friends with Master Huang since childhood.”
She offered her hand proactively, “Nice to meet you, I’m Zhao Shanshan. Captain Liu has been transferred to the Provincial Criminal Investigation Team, so now I’m in charge of the case regarding the female student’s mysterious death at Jiangcheng University.”
What? Liu has been transferred?
Fu Yang was both surprised and delighted. That meant he’d have plenty of opportunities to interact with this stunning woman!
He wasn’t a complete lecher, but working with a beautiful woman would lighten anyone’s mood. It’s the natural attraction between the sexes.
Zhao Shanshan glanced again at Ah Huang, still unconscious, then said there were matters at the station to attend to, and took her leave. She left Fu Yang her phone number, instructing him to call when Master Huang woke up so they could discuss the progress of the case. Clearly, this was no ordinary homicide—the higher-ups might have new arrangements and hoped for their assistance.
Fu Yang engraved her words in his memory.
Ah Huang was injured while helping voluntarily, so the police were generous, arranging for him to stay in the best private ward at the campus hospital—peaceful and spacious.
Fu Yang played with his phone while watching over the unconscious Ah Huang, ordering takeout twice for meals.
Unknowingly, day faded into night.
“So tired, my back hurts. Looks like I’ll have to sleep on the sofa tonight.”
Fu Yang stretched, looking out the window at the pitch-black sky, feeling the urge to relieve himself.
The campus hospital had one restroom per floor. Ah Huang’s private ward was at the end of the corridor on the fourth floor, the restroom at the opposite end.
He pushed open the door and stepped out. The corridor lights were dim, and several bulbs were broken. He wondered if the maintenance funds were being embezzled by the administration...
“This is a newly built wing, and already several lights are broken? If this isn’t shoddy construction, I’ll livestream myself eating dung!”
Fu Yang grumbled under his breath, annoyed. At night, the hospital corridors were eerily quiet, not a soul in sight.
Only the sound of his slippers echoed, tapping loudly in the emptiness.
He deliberately made noise to soothe his nerves, otherwise, in such silence, it was easy for the mind to wander.
Daytime was fine, but at night, images of the water demon corpse and the ghost prince child involuntarily surfaced in his mind. Moreover, this was the very campus hospital where he had once encountered walking corpses during night duty...
Passing the stairs, a cold wind spiraled up, making Fu Yang’s hair stand on end.
“Damn! What is there to fear? I know spells now. Any monster or ghost—if one shows up, I’ll deal with it; if two, I’ll handle them both!”
He cursed fiercely to bolster his courage.
Although he had no idea how to use the spell Master Dong Wei had taught him, his fear lessened. He quickened his pace and strode into the restroom.
No sooner had he entered than his stomach rumbled.
Clearly, nature was calling in a more urgent way.
“A rumbling stomach means the call of nature escalates.”
Fu Yang hurriedly chose the stall closest to the door, sat down on the toilet, and began his business, eager to finish quickly and return to the ward. The restroom felt cold and oppressive, distinctly uncomfortable.
He kept poking his head out nervously, scanning the stall’s surroundings, fearing something might crawl out and frighten him so badly he couldn’t even finish.
Just as Fu Yang was enjoying his relief, footsteps sounded in the corridor outside.
On his way from Ah Huang’s ward, Fu Yang had noticed no other patients in the rooms. After all, the campus hospital mainly served the students of Jiangcheng University; beds weren’t in high demand, so the floors weren’t fully occupied.
In other words, Ah Huang should be the only patient on the fourth floor, still unconscious. So how could there be footsteps?
“Could it be the night-shift doctor coming to the restroom? That’d be great—maybe we could chat while doing our business.”
Fu Yang tried to comfort himself, but his hands were sweating nervously. His gloves became clammy and uncomfortable, so he carefully took them off.
He sat upright on the toilet, not daring to move, for fear of making any noise.
He strained his ears. The footsteps approaching from the corridor were steady, but curiously accompanied by a faint dragging sound, as if something was being pulled along the floor.
Finally, the footsteps reached the restroom door and entered!
Fu Yang’s heart leapt to his throat. He wanted to shout out, ask who it was, but hesitated—if it was just the night-shift doctor, they’d think he was crazy.
The footsteps vanished as soon as they entered the restroom, plunging the place back into utter silence.
There could be only one explanation: the visitor had stopped moving upon entering, now standing right in front of Fu Yang’s stall!
Goosebumps covered Fu Yang’s body; his scalp tingled violently.
At that moment, a loud plop sounded as he finished his business.
Damn...! He’d literally been scared out of his wits!
He felt as if a thousand stampeding wild horses were galloping through his mind.
“That’s it, that noise was so loud even the deaf would hear it. My backside is really causing trouble.”
Plop, plop.
Something fell to the floor in front of his stall.
Rolling in from beneath the wooden stall door, two small spheres came to rest at Fu Yang’s feet.
Under the dim, ten-watt bulb overhead, Fu Yang saw what they were.
Instantly, a chill shot up his spine to the crown of his head!
They were two h
