Chapter Nine: A Fight? This Is Nothing Less Than a Hero Saving a Damsel in Distress
“As long as we apologize, you’ll let us go?” The leader of the gang looked rather displeased. In all his life, he had never been treated this way before.
“Of course,” Yang Wenhao nodded. Though he was hardly a man of his word when it came to the truly wicked, he felt no need for such calculation with these small-time thugs.
The gang leader gritted his teeth. “Fine. We’ll apologize.”
And so, under everyone’s watchful gaze, several grown men bowed and apologized to a boy of sixteen or seventeen.
Wang Xin was truly stunned by the sight. Never before had anyone apologized to him in such a manner. Not happy with it? Then you couldn’t leave. Bow and apologize obediently, and you could go. The feeling made Wang Xin giddy for a moment.
But he quickly realized that, if not for Yang Wenhao, he would have been in trouble today. His good fortune was thanks entirely to Yang Wenhao.
With a sheepish grin, Wang Xin said, “Hehe, Haozi, I never imagined you could fight like that.”
“You…” Yang Wenhao was at a loss for words. If he hadn’t been there today, Wang Xin wouldn’t have died, but he certainly would have suffered some serious injuries. For a young student like Wang Xin, that would have been severe enough.
“Uh… thank you.” The voice came from the beautiful woman who had been rescued earlier. Now that he got a good look at her, she was indeed quite attractive—pure and artistic, about twenty-two or twenty-three, dressed casually in a literary style.
“Hey, beautiful, what’s your name?” Wang Xin slid over with curiosity. “By the way, why did those guys try to kidnap you? Did you offend them?”
“My name is Su Muyu,” the woman replied. “Those men were sent by my grandfather.”
“What?” Wang Xin was stunned and looked at Yang Wenhao. “Haozi, did I hear that right? Her grandfather sent people to kidnap his own granddaughter? I can hardly believe it.”
Yang Wenhao gave Wang Xin a sidelong glance. “What does it matter whether you believe it or not? She’s got nothing to do with you.”
Wang Xin thought about it and realized that was true. “I guess you’re right.”
Yang Wenhao then turned and walked back to his seat at the late-night food stall.
Wang Xin, seeing this, invited Su Muyu, “Hey beautiful, want to join us?”
Curious about Yang Wenhao, Su Muyu nodded in agreement.
Wang Xin grinned with delight, thinking his luck with women had finally arrived.
Once they sat down, Su Muyu gazed at Yang Wenhao with wide, curious eyes.
“Beautiful, my name’s Wang Xin,” he said with a laugh, pointing at Yang Wenhao. “And this is my buddy, Yang Wenhao.”
“Thank you both for earlier,” Su Muyu said softly.
Wang Xin thumped his chest with bravado. “No problem! Don’t mention it. Even if a hundred more guys showed up, my brother wouldn’t be scared.”
Yang Wenhao, sitting beside them, rolled his eyes. A hundred more? Did Wang Xin think this was a gangster brawl? Always exaggerating.
Su Muyu asked, “By the way, did you already know how skilled your friend was?”
The question sparked Wang Xin’s interest. He looked at Yang Wenhao, “Haozi, how come I never knew you could fight like that?”
“That’s because you’re blind,” Yang Wenhao replied flatly.
Su Muyu burst out laughing at his response.
Wang Xin’s irritation evaporated at the sight of her laughter.
At that moment, the wail of police sirens sounded on the street. Soon, a patrol car pulled up, and three officers stepped out.
A stern-faced policewoman called out, “Someone reported a disturbance. Who called the police?”
“Over here,” a customer at a nearby table raised his hand.
The officers went over, exchanged a few words, and soon the customer pointed in Wang Xin’s direction, apparently identifying them.
The policewoman led her team over. “So you were the ones fighting?” she asked, pulling out a notepad as if to take statements.
“Fighting?” Wang Xin was flabbergasted. “Come on, this was a classic rescue, not a brawl!”
A male officer beside her barked, “Answer the question and behave yourself.”
The policewoman waved her hand, signaling him to back off, and he withdrew.
Just as she was about to continue, she caught sight of Su Muyu sitting there.
Su Muyu blinked, looking back at her.
The policewoman was surprised. “Muyu? What are you doing here?”
Su Muyu smiled, “Jingxuan, the so-called ‘brawl’ you mentioned was about me.”
Jingxuan, the policewoman, asked, “Your grandfather sent people after you?”
Su Muyu nodded. “If it weren’t for them, I probably would’ve been kidnapped.”
“That’s fortunate,” Jingxuan said, nodding.
Su Muyu turned to Wang Xin and Yang Wenhao. “Let me introduce you—this is my best friend, Fang Jingxuan.”
“Hello, beautiful, I’m Wang Xin,” Wang Xin grinned. “And this is my buddy, Yang Wenhao.”
“Thank you both for helping Muyu,” Fang Jingxuan said, not minding Wang Xin’s attitude. Saving Su Muyu was thanks enough.
“No need to thank me, really. If anyone deserves it, it’s my friend here—I only played a minor part,” Wang Xin replied, not exaggerating his own role since it was Yang Wenhao who handled everything.
“Your friend managed all of it alone?” Fang Jingxuan looked at Yang Wenhao with surprise.
Though he seemed only sixteen or seventeen, his composure and calm far exceeded his age, which amazed Fang Jingxuan. She knew exactly what kind of men Su Muyu’s grandfather would send, so for someone so young to handle them single-handedly was truly remarkable.
She said to Su Muyu, “Muyu, you should come with me for now. It’s not safe for you to be alone.”
Su Muyu hesitated, then nodded. “Alright, I’ll stay with you for a while.”
Fang Jingxuan was pleased. “Good. Let’s wrap things up and go.”
One of the male officers spoke up. “But Captain Fang, what about them…”
“Who’s the captain here, me or you?” Fang Jingxuan’s tone was stern.
“You are, Captain…” he mumbled, feeling humiliated being overruled by a woman, but there was nothing he could do.
“Then we’re done here.”
As she was leaving, Su Muyu turned to Wang Xin and Yang Wenhao. “Thank you both for today. Next time, dinner’s on me.”
With that, Su Muyu departed. As for her promise, Wang Xin and Yang Wenhao just smiled. Dinner? Without a phone number or address? That seemed unlikely.
After eating for a while longer, Wang Xin and Yang Wenhao settled the bill and headed home together.
