Chapter Fifty-Nine: A Hero Rescues the Maiden
“Mr. Jiang, what are you doing here?”
Upon hearing Chairman Che’s question, Jiang Jize responded as if he were listening to a joke.
“Chairman Che, you’re making things difficult for my girlfriend here, and you’re asking why I’m here?”
Jiang Jize’s words shocked everyone: Bai Chenxi is Jiang Jize’s girlfriend?
Wang Ling glanced at Bai Chenxi upon hearing this, and Bai Chenxi returned her a puzzled look.
Wang Ling immediately understood and said nothing more.
As everyone was still reeling from the surprise, Jiang Jize walked over and draped his coat over Bai Chenxi’s shoulders.
He spoke in a tone that was both aggrieved and indulgent, “Honestly, it’s bad enough that you argue with me, but how could you come to such a messy dinner?”
“We’re going home,” he said, wrapping his arm around Bai Chenxi and heading out, not bothering to spare another glance for anyone.
Wang Ling quickly followed after them.
Once outside the hotel, Jiang Jize let go of Bai Chenxi.
He asked with concern, “Are you alright? Thank goodness you ran into me today.”
He then turned to Wang Ling, his voice stern, “Didn’t you check things out before coming here?”
Wang Ling was consumed by guilt and said nothing.
Bai Chenxi spoke up, “Thank you, Mr. Jiang.”
“No need. I’m really doing this for Chu Muyun. If he found out I stood by and watched you get into trouble, he’d give me hell.”
Jiang Jize seemed not in the least embarrassed about worrying over his own employee.
Bai Chenxi wasn’t in the mood to dwell on these things.
She handed his suit jacket back to Jiang Jize. “Thank you again, Mr. Jiang. We’ll head home now.”
Jiang Jize took the jacket, still uneasy. “Let me drive you home.”
“That’s not necessary.” Bai Chenxi refused without a second thought.
She had no intention of jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Jiang Jize didn’t seem like that kind of person, but one could never be sure.
Jiang Jize, mindful of Bai Chenxi’s mood, didn’t press her further.
He watched as Bai Chenxi and Wang Ling got into their car and drove away. Then he picked up his phone and made a call.
Chu Muyun’s expression changed dramatically as he answered the call. Without saying a word, he dashed out.
Zhang Kai shouted after him, “Chu Muyun, where are you going?”
Watching Chu Muyun disappear, Zhang Kai and Xiao Wen exchanged bewildered glances.
Who else could make Chu Muyun so anxious, if not Bai Chenxi?
Zhang Kai felt a headache coming on: ever since Bai Chenxi appeared, Chu Muyun had become increasingly unpredictable.
He’d wanted Chu Muyun to fall in love just to see him make a fool of himself.
But not like this, always leaving Zhang Kai with a pile of messes to clean up while he ran off. Where had the old workaholic Chu Muyun gone?
Chu Muyun sped all the way to Bai Chenxi’s door, only to find she hadn’t returned yet.
“Sister Wang, I’m here. You should go home and rest.”
Wang Ling looked at her. “Are you sure you’re alright? Maybe I should stay with you.”
Bai Chenxi smiled indifferently. “I’m really fine, Sister Wang. Who am I? I couldn’t care less about that kind of scum.”
Sister Wang still looked at Bai Chenxi with concern.
“Alright, Sister Wang. It’s late, you should head home and rest.”
After speaking, Bai Chenxi even yawned. Seeing Bai Chenxi like this, Wang Ling, out of respect, agreed.
Bai Chenxi waved to Wang Ling with a smile, and watched her car drive away. Her smile froze at the corners of her mouth, her hand dropping weakly.
When Bai Chenxi reached her door, she saw Chu Muyun leaning against the door frame.
Hearing her approach, Chu Muyun turned around, a glimmer of light in his eyes. “You’re back?”
Bai Chenxi nodded, still pretending to be strong. Yet seeing Chu Muyun now, she felt she couldn’t keep up the façade any longer.
Chu Muyun walked quickly to Bai Chenxi and gently embraced her, whispering in her ear, “I’m here.”
Chu Muyun’s voice at that moment was so gentle, yet to Bai Chenxi’s ears, it felt powerful.
In Chu Muyun’s arms, she felt as if she could forget everything and simply have someone to rely on.
Bai Chenxi wrapped her arms around Chu Muyun, and neither spoke further. They just quietly held each other.
After a long while, Bai Chenxi let go of Chu Muyun, lowering her head. “Thank you.”
Thinking of the relationship between Jiang Jize and Chu Muyun, and recalling Chu Muyun’s words just now, Bai Chenxi tentatively asked,
“Did you come for something? Did you…learn something?”
Chu Muyun didn’t answer, but instead asked, “Are we going to stand here talking all night?”
Only then did Bai Chenxi go to unlock the door.
As soon as they entered, Bai Chenxi said, “Would you like something to drink? I’ll get it for you.”
Chu Muyun took hold of Bai Chenxi’s wrist. “No need.”
Weighing his words, Chu Muyun spoke slowly, “Jiang Jize just told me everything.”
Bai Chenxi didn’t turn around, pretending to be at ease. “Oh, really? It’s nothing much, and he still told you.”
She turned back. “You didn’t come here just to comfort me, did you? I’m really fine.”
“I’m sorry.”
Chu Muyun’s sudden apology left Bai Chenxi bewildered.
Chu Muyun continued, “Chairman Che and I have some past grievances. Jiang Jize overheard and assumed… assumed you were my girlfriend, so he deliberately targeted you.”
Chu Muyun looked at Bai Chenxi apologetically. “I’m sorry, I dragged you into this.”
“Why are you apologizing? It’s not your fault that you ran into a scumbag. If anyone should apologize, it’s that jerk.”
Hearing Bai Chenxi’s words, Chu Muyun felt a wave of relief.
“If that scum said anything offensive, don’t let it bother you. Anything that comes out of a scumbag’s mouth is rubbish, best ignored.”
