Chapter 143: Tension
Soon, Tang Su realized that the money had indeed been transferred, but to which account and whose account was not necessarily what she had imagined.
At this moment, Tang Su didn’t dare to overthink it. She kept saying, “If you don’t believe me, go ask Qin Fei. I really transferred the agreed five million to Qi Lang. I have no reason to plant such a huge bomb for just two and a half million.”
Yet, she never considered that even if she had truly transferred five million to Qi Lang, it wouldn’t change the facts of the case.
Hiring a killer was a fact.
She would go to prison. Although the atrocious act of hitting Song Wan with a car, failing to kill her, and then running her over a second time was not ordered by her, the undeniable truth was that she had planned to kill Song Wan.
Qin Fei had already been arrested. Out of fear of Song Wan’s vengeful spirit returning, he confessed to all his crimes, trembling.
For example, suppressing and threatening his underlings’ rivals;
Suppressing artists disliked by Tang Su and others;
Forcing unwilling artists into bed with investors for resources...
Often, supernatural matters were more effective than the law.
The police were puzzled as to why Qin Fei would confess everything, as many of the crimes he mentioned were unknown to them.
The entertainment industry was such a world—unless they were sure they wouldn’t get implicated or that their interests weren’t threatened, no one would expose the crimes they saw, heard, or accidentally discovered. It was to their own disadvantage.
Often, for the sake of their careers, people wouldn’t report even the evils they had personally suffered.
Sometimes out of helplessness, intimidated by the other party’s power; more often, because reporting wouldn’t bring justice but would cause them to lose more, even be doubted, despised, or inexplicably hated.
The police recorded every crime Qin Fei confessed and decided to visit the victims listed in his statements.
But every officer found Qin Fei’s reason for confessing ridiculous, even suspecting drug use, for how else could such severe hallucinations arise?
—He claimed that Song Wan, killed by Tang Su, had come back for revenge.
It was utterly absurd and laughable.
No one believed it, but no one pursued it either.
Song Wan had anticipated this long ago. She even told Qi Lang she had come back to life because she knew this fact was too incredible. Even if Qi Lang told others, no one would believe it unless they had a guilty conscience or knew her too well.
When Song Wan returned to the villa, she unexpectedly found Jin Youqian sitting in the living room. Seeing her come back, his face was extremely unfriendly.
She walked over with some confusion. “What’s wrong? Did something happen at work?”
As an actress, Song Wan was highly observant. At any other time, she would have immediately noticed that Jin Youqian’s displeasure was directed at her.
But now, exhausted and distracted, she couldn’t focus.
Jin Youqian was quite displeased but noticed her weary, absent expression. He opened his mouth but ultimately sighed helplessly. “Go rest in the bedroom first.”
After saying this, he stood and headed upstairs.
Song Wan was momentarily stunned but quickly snapped out of it and followed.
Jin Youqian didn’t enter the bedroom but went to the study instead. Standing at the door, he hesitated before turning to Song Wan. “Get ready. We’re going back to the old family home tomorrow to visit Grandpa.”
This had been arranged the day Mrs. Jin unexpectedly came over.
Song Wan was dazed and quickly apologized, “Mr. Jin, I’m really sorry. There’s been so much going on these days that I forgot about this…”
Even though she had genuinely been too busy to remember the prior arrangement, Song Wan didn’t shirk responsibility. Instead, she admitted her mistake and sought a way to make amends.
“Mr. Jin, do you know what Mrs. Jin and the others like? I can have someone buy something for them…”
She nervously asked about Jin Youqian’s family’s preferences, but her way of addressing them only darkened Jin Youqian’s face further.
Regretting that she had reminded her, Jin Youqian felt a little annoyed.
“You don’t have to worry about gifts. I just wanted to remind you to keep tomorrow free,” he said, though displeased. “You’re tired today; go to sleep.”
Song Wan rubbed her aching brow, feeling a touch of warmth inside.
But soon she summoned her strength and said, “Now that my status is different, and Mrs. Jin knows about our relationship, as your wife, I must fulfill my duties and help them accept your choice.”
Even if they remained dissatisfied, at least her attitude would be beyond reproach.
Jin Youqian thought for a moment, then said, “It’s unnecessary. You’re the wife I chose. Even if they’re unhappy, they have no right to meddle.”
Song Wan blinked, suddenly recalling Jin Youqian’s parents’ love story and instantly understanding.
It seemed Jin Youqian had learned from his parents’ experience and had taken control of his marriage early on.
But that only meant his family wouldn’t oppose Jin Youqian’s choice; it didn’t mean they wouldn’t be displeased with her.
Song Wan thought it over and decided to proceed her way. “Mr. Jin, are you really not going to tell me what your family likes?”
Jin Youqian frowned. What trouble was she trying to stir up now?
Song Wan smiled slyly, “If you don’t tell me, I’ll just ask butler Feng for help…”
“Follow me!” Jin Youqian glared at her irritably, then turned into the study, motioning for her to follow.
Song Wan chuckled, finding Jin Youqian adorably naive in this regard.
He didn’t consider that butler Feng had recently become distant toward her, no longer as close as before, sometimes even giving her a look of disdain. How could she embarrass herself by going to him?
The next day came quickly.
Song Wan first asked Gao Xiang for leave. Upon learning Song Wan was going to meet the family, Gao Xiang teased her mercilessly—
“Everyone meets the family first, then gets married. I’ve seen many people, but only you are so special, getting married for months before thinking of meeting the family.” She laughed again. “What’s worse, you forgot to meet the family right up to the last moment. You’re really carefree.”
Song Wan didn’t feel embarrassed at all. “What’s so strange? My marriage with Mr. Jin isn’t a normal one. Of course, I can’t be as nervous as ordinary couples meeting the family.”
Though she said she would fulfill her duty, there was a huge difference between doing something out of obligation and doing it from the heart.
Most importantly, Song Wan couldn’t be trembling with anxiety over whether Jin Youqian’s family would dislike her as a daughter-in-law or granddaughter-in-law.
If they disliked her, so be it. When Jin Youqian grew tired of her, she’d just divorce him.
Because she wasn’t worried, she didn’t take the meeting too seriously and thus found it hard to be as nervous as someone meeting their boyfriend’s family for the first time.
Jin Youqian naturally noticed this. Though a little displeased, he soon relaxed.
From Song Wan’s attitude yesterday, he had worried she’d be nervous about meeting his family. Seeing her so at ease now, he was reassured.
After Song Wan finished the call, Jin Youqian sat in the driver’s seat. “Let’s go.”
Song Wan carried the gifts—after asking Jin Youqian’s family preferences the day before, they had picked them out together at the mall.
The gift for the old Mr. Jin was a jade chessboard, beautifully crafted from warm jade that felt cool in summer and warm in winter.
Song Wan didn’t know if this was true, but Jin Youqian had chosen it at a glance.
The gift for Mrs. Jin was simpler—a set of clothes plus a few DVDs of melodramatic TV series.
Song Wan suspected the expensive clothes were just for show, and the real gift was the trashy dramas.
However, Jin Youqian’s unwavering gaze made Song Wan hesitant to speak.
She recalled having Gao Xiang get the lead actors to sign the DVDs yesterday, hoping the gift would please Mrs. Jin.
As for Mr. Jin...
Jin Youqian said as long as Mrs. Jin was satisfied with her, Mr. Jin wouldn’t complain, so there was no need to please him.
Song Wan was speechless.
She sensed deeply that Jin Youqian held a grudge against his father, and it was a deep one.
Still, she ignored Jin Youqian’s words and brought Mr. Jin a suit matching Mrs. Jin’s style and color.
Butler Feng had already arrived at the old family home ahead of them.
So when the two arrived at the Jin family estate, it was Butler Feng who greeted them—a familiar face to Song Wan.
“Young master, young madam, the old master and others are waiting inside.” Butler Feng smiled warmly, the distance that had lingered in his eyes days ago now gone.
Song Wan was completely puzzled and turned to Jin Youqian.
He got out of the car and came around to open her door. “Don’t be nervous. They will like you.”
Those three, who gleefully basked in his scandals, would never give Song Wan trouble.
Having a daughter-in-law like her was already something to be grateful for in their lifetime.
Song Wan didn’t know what Jin Youqian was thinking but suddenly realized that even though she knew their marriage was unconventional, deep down, she was still a bit anxious and flustered.
Nervousness meant she cared.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she couldn’t help but glance at Jin Youqian with a look full of meaning.
Jin Youqian frowned in confusion. “What’s wrong?”
