Chapter Forty-Two: Bountiful Harvest
“Acquired [Soul Suppressing Nail] *1, transferred to backpack.”
“At last, everything’s ready,” Mu Chen breathed a long sigh of relief. In the now empty room, only he and three skeletons remained.
“I can’t comment without knowing the details, but looking at the three of you, there’s a certain warmth. Once I get out, I’ll bury you together.” With that, he stored the three skeletons in his backpack. The space beneath the bunker was vast and would inevitably be used sooner or later; leaving the bones here unsettled him.
“Acquired [Skeleton] *618, transferred to backpack.”
With the skeletons stowed away, he found himself holding a silver-white necklace and a photo album with a plastic cover.
It was unclear which skeleton had left these behind.
[Mithril Magic Necklace (Damaged): It has lost its most important part, making it no different from an ordinary necklace.]
[Magic Source Stone! Magic Source Stone! Magic Source Stone! Important things bear repeating! Do you see that groove? You know what to do. Once, a little creature used it to restore its magic. Unfortunately, just as it broke free from its seal, it encountered its nemesis.]
“Tch, if you have something to say, just say it openly. No need for veiled messages,” Mu Chen muttered, clicking his tongue as he retrieved the Magic Source Stone from his backpack.
A thumb-sized, azure-blue oval gem appeared in his palm. Its shape was a perfect fit for the groove on the necklace’s pendant.
The moment he placed the stone into the groove, a unique suction force fused them together.
[Mithril Magic Necklace: A ladies’ necklace set with a Magic Source Stone. Skill 1: Restores 5 magic points to the wearer per hour. Skill 2: Magic Storage (100 points).]
“A ladies’ necklace...”
There were only a handful of women in the territory, and only Ivy possessed magic.
He put the necklace away and flipped open the photo album in his hand.
“This...”
The very first photograph wove a web of information through his mind. Though the picture was black and white, it did nothing to obscure the faces.
A couple held a young boy...
The boy’s face...
Suddenly, he didn’t want to look any further. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust; even if he learned the truth of decades past, it meant nothing to him now.
“It just goes to show, every era has its incomprehensible tragedies.”
...
The underground bunker was vast. After retreating to the entrance, he glanced back down the corridor behind him.
The vengeful spirit was truly terrifying.
Had he not been immune to illusions, he might very well have fallen victim to it.
“The boy and his family died in the modern era—so there were vengeful spirits even then?” Mu Chen’s gaze flickered. “My priority now is to leave. This trip was a blessing in disguise, and the rewards have been plentiful.”
There were still many unexplored areas in the bunker. He’d return with Ivy to investigate further once the toxic gas had fully dissipated, just in case.
Soon.
He fashioned a sturdy wooden spear at the workbench, looped a rope around it, and tossed it up through the entrance. When both ends caught on the sides, Mu Chen finally relaxed a little.
Just then, a message from Mu Jiu’er came through.
“Brother, what are you doing in the air-raid shelter?”
“???”
Mu Chen felt awkward as he struggled upward. How did this girl know he was in the bunker...?
As his head poked out of the entrance, two pairs of petite shoes appeared beside him.
