Chapter 134: Let's Go, Wangcai!
Andy pushed his sorcery to the limit, accelerating to keep pace with the magic wolf and the young woman riding upon its back. Yet, he gradually realized that his speed was still insufficient. Fortunately, the streets of the royal capital were convoluted and crowded with pedestrians, preventing both Andy and the magic wolf from reaching their full potential, which allowed him to barely keep them in sight.
People in the capital were long accustomed to the presence of sorcerers. Such a massive magic wolf running brazenly through the streets caused no panic; it merely drew a few gazes of envy and awe.
During the pursuit, Andy kept his Eagle Eye vision active. Initially, he had been cautious of being detected and had tracked her while hiding his presence, but once he realized he could not match her speed, he simply emerged and followed in plain sight.
This prompted the girl on the giant wolf to glance back at him with curiosity. Andy hurriedly waved his hands to signal her to wait, but, unfortunately, he was ignored.
However, when the girl turned, Andy, who had been using his Eagle Eye since the start of the chase, saw her face clearly. A sense of familiarity washed over him. With his enhanced memory talent now becoming second nature, a moment of reflection brought the realization that he had seen this girl at the Dallas City Coronation Festival during a performance by the Dark Night Circus. Only then, she hadn't been with this wolf, but with a massive lion!
She was the lion-tamer of the Dark Night Circus.
The lion-tamer’s name was Monica. She was in a hurry to return to her hometown and thus paid no heed to the man pursuing her. In her mind, this was likely just another admirer captivated by her beauty, and if she were to stop, there was no telling how long she would be pestered.
Watching Andy chase after her while waving, Monica smiled faintly, patted the magic wolf beneath her, and said, "Wangcai, faster!"
The giant wolf bounded forward with even greater enthusiasm. Monica was very satisfied with this new pet. Her previous lion, Duoduo, had not been this intelligent; it had taken a long time to train it to understand even simple commands, as it was, after all, merely a strong beast.
After Monica advanced to a high-level sorcerer apprentice, Duoduo had gradually become a burden, so she had spent the past few days searching for a new companion. Fortunately, her close friend from the circus, Ah Li, had managed to procure this magic wolf from somewhere, and Monica had fallen in love with it the moment she saw it.
Sharp-witted, swift, physically robust, possessing exceptional close-combat abilities, and even more outstanding in long-range spellcasting—in Monica’s eyes, this magic wolf was a darling of heaven, enough to make even her intensely jealous. Having set her heart on it, she purchased it on the spot for a high price.
Of course, it would have been impossible to afford such a creature with her earnings from the circus, but Monica had never worried about money in her life.
She was a second-generation sorcerer—a "sorcerer-spawn."
Her father was Bertram, the vice-president of the Green Phoenix Society. Although Monica had joined the society, she never had to endure the grueling missions that people like Alvis did. She was free to pursue her whims. She loved performing, loved being the center of attention, and loved the thrill of being pursued. And so, she had joined the Dark Night Circus as a star performer.
Occasionally, however, depending on the circumstances and provided it did not interfere with her career, she would handle minor tasks for the Green Phoenix Society. For instance, she had once met with the Masked Knight Schmidt in Dallas City.
She had volunteered for that intelligence-delivery mission mainly because rumors suggested Schmidt was handsome, and she wanted to see for herself. As for arriving at the royal capital, she didn't even have the slightest interest in visiting Alvis and his group. If they lacked good looks, they could fend for themselves!
Traveling alone, Monica was not concerned for her safety. Her father doted on her; before she left, he had prepared five spatial bags for her, filled with clothes, jewelry, snacks, daily necessities, scrolls, secret treasures, equipment, and magic arrays. He had even conducted professional ambush simulations for her, which concluded that not even two Silver Sorcerers combined could detain her.
Now, with Wangcai by her side, she was even less afraid, and she even secretly looked forward to a little excitement during her journey.
The reason she was in such a rush to return to the Principality of Sien was that she had heard her father was on the verge of ascending to a Gold-level Sorcerer. He had already reached the mental strength requirement and needed only to construct a level-5 spell model to complete his promotion.
In truth, her father had been researching level-5 spells for a long time; his progress had been delayed primarily by his mental energy. This was because Bertram had spent a vast portion of his resources on his beloved daughter, which had hindered his own progress.
Monica had once taken this for granted while she was by her father's side, but after venturing out on her own for so long, she truly understood how rare such devotion was. Especially for sorcerers, whose emotions were often more detached than those of ordinary people, personal strength usually took precedence over everything else.
Feeling the weight of his love, she was determined to travel thousands of miles to return home upon hearing the news. She had to ensure that when her father finished his ascension, the first thing he saw was his beloved daughter, so she could offer her congratulations in person.
Moreover, Monica analyzed that her father's promotion would have significant implications for the entire Principality of Sien, making it all the more important for her to witness the moment.
The life of the current Gold-level powerhouse of the Elan Kingdom, Dean Rossman of the Grimm Academy, was nearing its end. As it stood, the only Gold-level figure they could field was Marshal Vaughn, who was merely a knight and far from possessing the combat capability of a Gold-level Sorcerer.
Conversely, the Gold-level powerhouse of the Principality of Sien, the first-generation Duke of Sien, was in his prime, and with Bertram about to advance, the balance of top-tier power between the two nations would be completely shattered. That might well influence the direction of the war on the front lines.
As Monica was lost in thought about her father, Wangcai carried her out of the royal capital. With the terrain suddenly flat and open, the magic wolf’s speed advantage could be fully unleashed. At that moment, Monica noticed that the person behind her was still following, moving fast and with great persistence.
"Perhaps I should give him a chance," Monica mused. Since he was so persistent, he might be a loyal fan. If he looked decent enough, she thought she might stop to see what he wanted.
Monica turned back to check his appearance, only to realize that Andy was wearing a black hooded cloak, wrapped up tightly from head to toe.
"Hmph, a skulking fellow. He doesn't look like a good person at all," Monica thought to herself, gesturing for Wangcai to accelerate.
"Wangcai, let’s go!"
