Volume One, Chapter 27: The Family’s Cabbage Is About to Be Snatched Away, Beyond Saving
Hearing this, Su Ling's face was filled with shock. "Xiao Yu, are you feeling alright? That guy's one of Li Gang's people."
"I know. But look at him now—he probably can't go back to Li Gang's side anymore."
"But…"
Su Muyu tugged at her aunt. "Just let him be."
Wu Kenan was also surprised by this exchange. "Are you pitying me?"
"If that's how you see it, then yes."
"Why would you help me? I'm one of Li Gang's men."
"Let me remind you: the one who takes the fall for Li Gang, wasn't it Li Gang who orchestrated all this?"
Jiang Yu smiled with a touch of nonchalance.
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Keeping you around might prove useful. You know all the inside stories about Li Gang. When the time comes to crush him, who knows, you might come in handy."
So that's how it was. Su Ling, standing to the side, now understood Jiang Yu's intent.
This kid was quite cunning. How had she not thought of that?
Wu Kenan hesitated.
"If this puts you in a difficult spot, just forget I said anything," Jiang Yu said with a smile, then turned to the two women. "Aunt, Muyu, let's go."
Just as they were about to leave, Wu Kenan called after them.
"Wait! I'm willing to be your assistant."
Jiang Yu paused, turning to Su Ling. "Aunt, I'll leave this to you."
Su Ling grinned and walked up to Wu Kenan. "There's no problem with your contract, is there?"
Wu Kenan pulled a folded document from his pocket and handed it to Su Ling.
"Well, well, a termination agreement. Li Gang really got the short end of the stick this time." She then extended a hand. "Congratulations, you've passed Huayue Entertainment's interview. From now on, you're Jiang Yu's exclusive assistant. Once he starts working, you'll follow him everywhere."
"Thank you, President Su!" Wu Kenan hesitated for a moment, then took out his phone and looked at Jiang Yu. "I have a small gift here for you, to thank you for your help."
"What is it?" Jiang Yu looked at Wu Kenan's phone, puzzled.
It was a recording.
As they listened, it turned out to be a recording of Li Gang asking Wu Kenan to take the fall for him.
Wu Kenan scratched his head.
When Li Gang first approached him, he had mentioned the contract termination. Having spent some time in the entertainment industry, Wu Kenan knew that none of these bosses could be trusted, so when negotiating, he decided to record everything to protect his own interests.
Thus, this complete recording came into existence.
"Well done, kid!" Su Ling said excitedly, giving him a pat on the shoulder. "Go home and get some rest. Report to the company tomorrow."
Wu Kenan nodded and left.
Su Ling continued, "I'm going back to the company now to see how best to use this recording."
Jiang Yu shook his head. "Better not, Aunt. Wu Kenan must have signed a confidentiality agreement. If this leaks, it could harm him."
Su Ling was taken aback by his words. "You're being overly considerate. Don't worry about the money; I'll cover it!"
"Aunt, let Yu finish," Su Muyu said, stepping behind Jiang Yu.
Su Ling was left flustered.
"It's not that I'm being overly considerate—it's about being prepared."
"Prepared for what?" Su Ling looked puzzled.
Jiang Yu's lips curled into a slight smile. "There are two reasons."
For days now, his name had dominated the trending searches. Hogging public attention like that not only sours public opinion but could offend senior artists who want to buy their own trending spots, which would be bad for his career.
Su Ling couldn't argue with that.
The other reason was that "Two and a Half Years as an Idol" was about to begin, and Star Entertainment would also be sending people to participate. There was no guarantee they wouldn't pull dirty tricks. Even if they didn't, the recording could be used to stir up some publicity.
Jiang Yu wasn't a bad person, but he wasn't exactly a saint either. If someone wanted to go after him, he naturally had to strike back.
After explaining, Su Muyu couldn't help but glance several more times at Jiang Yu.
Su Ling's eyes lit up. "Xiao Jiang, impressive! You're a perfect fit for the pace of this industry. Alright, I'll go make preparations as you suggest."
Jiang Yu wanted to say more, but suddenly felt two burning gazes on him. Turning his head, he saw Su Muyu staring intently at him, making him a little uneasy.
"Xiaoyu, that thing just now, you…"
Su Muyu calmly shook her head. "Do you know what kind of people I dislike the most?"
The sudden question puzzled Jiang Yu, but he said nothing, simply holding the beauty's gaze.
Su Muyu smiled. Born into wealth and a child star, she had seen all kinds of people, especially in the entertainment industry.
"Faithless philanderers, those skilled in manipulation and without principle, people who make a show of being rebellious, the arrogant who look down on everyone, and the overly compassionate good guys."
As she spoke, Su Muyu looked proud. She had no interest in such men.
She didn't dislike what Jiang Yu had just said—in fact, she thought he had some real cunning.
If someone tries to harm you and you don't even think of fighting back, that's not naivety—that's just stupidity.
So many things she disliked. Jiang Yu gave an awkward smile and began a mental self-check. He didn't seem to fit any of those descriptions...right?
"What a fool. I'll go with Aunt; let the driver take you home to rest and prepare for the competition."
Su Muyu couldn't help but laugh. The sight left Jiang Yu a little dazed, and it wasn't until the driver called him over that he snapped out of it.
Su Muyu and Su Ling had already left.
In the car.
"Aunt, I want to be a mentor on 'Two and a Half Years as an Idol.' Is that possible?"
"You've never taken part in variety shows before—of course you can." Su Ling replied without thinking, but then she sensed something was off and looked at Su Muyu teasingly. "Xiaoyu, do you like Jiang Yu?"
The previously proud Su Muyu blushed immediately. "Aunt!"
"Please, I've been around the block. You think I can't tell? I watched you grow up—do you think you can hide a little crush from me?"
Su Muyu was practically burying her face in her chest, mumbling softly, "I... I don't know. But I don't dislike him. Maybe... I like him a little?"
A little? Does she think I'm blind? That's more than a little!
Su Ling sighed.
"Xiaoyu, you have to understand, being in a relationship now will be bad for your career. Besides, Jiang Yu isn't exactly accomplished yet—"
"I don't care about the industry. And as for his lack of strength..."
At that, Su Muyu finally lifted her head, her voice full of pride. "Then I'll help him become strong."
Ah, the true heiress of the Su family.
"That's true. To be fair, that kid's character, talent, and shrewdness are all outstanding among his peers."
Su Ling nodded, then grinned.
"Tell me, when did you start liking him? Was it his looks? His talent?"
The proud heiress blushed again.
"I... I met him in high school.
"He helped me a lot. Maybe I started liking him back then…"
Su Muyu went on and on.
Su Ling could only sigh again. Her sweet little cabbage was about to be taken, and there was nothing she could do to stop it. What now? Seeking urgent online help.
"Do you think he likes you?"
"Aunt, do you think any woman around Jiang Yu could possibly be my rival?" Su Muyu lifted her chin in defiance.
"...Fair point!"
