Chapter 28: Mistaken for a Lunatic
Lin Xiaoyan checked her phone screen repeatedly, anxious about the time and terrified of being late.
With three minutes left, the elevator "dinged" and the doors slid open. Lin Xiaoyan quickly stepped out, ready to dash to the time clock. However, a delivery driver suddenly appeared and bolted into the elevator. As they crossed paths, they collided. The slender Lin Xiaoyan stumbled backward, but someone behind her caught her, preventing a fall.
Lin Xiaoyan felt a mix of relief and despair. She "saw" the vision flashing before her eyes and screamed internally—she would have preferred to just fall to the ground! She stood up stiffly, thanking the person behind her with a rigid voice. When she looked up at the man, she couldn't help but be struck by his handsome face, even though she had already seen it in her vision.
"Sorry, I'm sorry, I'm in a rush to finish my deliveries!" the driver apologized.
Lin Xiaoyan snapped back to reality, checked her phone, and realized there was only one minute left! She sprinted out of the elevator and managed to punch in just as the clock hit the mark. Panting and clutching her chest, she felt a wave of relief; if she had been late, her morning’s work would have been for nothing.
As the elevator doors closed, Jing Yi, who was still inside, watched her punch in with a faint smile. He couldn't help but wonder, what exactly did that guy He Qi'an see in this Lin Xiaoyan?
Lin Xiaoyan turned back to the elevator, unaware of who the man inside was. She felt uneasy. Just then, her manager walked over and greeted her with a smile. "Good morning, Xiao Lin."
"Good morning, Manager," she replied, quickly heading to her desk. Aileen soon placed some paperwork on her desk. "Xiao Lin, these are the files you need to organize today."
"Got it, Sister Lin."
Lin Xiaoyan suppressed her anxiety, but as she sat at her computer, she remained unsettled. When lunch finally arrived, she grabbed her phone and headed downstairs to a quiet spot. She prepared to call He Qi'an, but suddenly remembered the regulations of the Special Investigation Bureau. She backed out of his contact page and dialed 110 instead.
"Hello, this is..."
Having joined the national agency herself, Lin Xiaoyan no longer felt the same nervousness or fear when reporting to the police. "Hello, I’d like to report a crime. Someone is going to be kidnapped. I don't know him personally, but you can look up his information..."
Earlier that morning, the moment she touched Jing Yi, she had "seen" him being kidnapped later that evening. The kidnappers would pose as his chauffeur. When Jing Yi realized the truth, he would fight for the steering wheel, leading to a crash when the car went out of control. The final image was of Jing Yi covered in blood, his body twisted, with no sign of life.
The dispatcher on duty, Yi Bian, listened to her frantic, disjointed report. After politely apologizing, he hung up. "Sigh, why are people so young ending up with mental illnesses these days?" he muttered, shaking his head.
Lin Xiaoyan was stunned when the call ended. She dialed again, reaching the same person. "Hello, listen, what I said is true. That man will be kidnapped tonight. I'm not lying. Please, investigate his identity this afternoon..."

The line went dead again. Lin Xiaoyan frowned, realizing they must think she was a lunatic. Frustrated by the failure of her attempt to report it, she had no choice but to call He Qi'an.
He Qi'an, who was preparing to interrogate a suspect, felt his phone vibrate. Seeing it was Lin Xiaoyan, he answered. "Hello."
Hearing his cold voice, Lin Xiaoyan felt her nerves flare up. "Hello, it's... Lin Xiaoyan..."
"I know. What is it?" He Qi'an gestured for his team to head to the conference room.
"Well, this morning on my way to work, I saw a man who is going to be kidnapped tonight..." She quickly recounted the vision. Upon hearing the word "kidnapped," He Qi'an’s expression shifted.
"Tell me the time and place you encountered him." He pulled out a pen and paper, recording the details. "Understood. I will track him down. I'll contact you once I have something."
"Oh, okay." Lin Xiaoyan breathed a sigh of relief as she prepared to hang up.
"By the way," He Qi'an added.
"Yes?"
"Your mission is complete. You can confirm it in your task progress." He reminded her, having noticed she hadn't clicked the confirmation button that morning.
"Oh, right."
"I've submitted your bonus request. Everyone at Ailer Hospital has been arrested; it will be made public in a couple of days. I’m giving your mission a five-star rating!"
"Thank you." Lin Xiaoyan was surprised that missions required ratings—it felt like shopping online.
He Qi'an debated asking why she had cursed at him in the operating room, but decided against it, fearing it would make him look petty. He hung up.
Lin Xiaoyan scratched her head, finding He Qi'an’s behavior rather bizarre. Shrugging it off, she logged into the Special Investigation Bureau’s app and confirmed her mission completion.
"Hey, our new colleague finished a case as soon as she joined!"
"Let me see... well, look at that. But why isn't this new colleague at the Beijing Bureau? We don't have a single psychic in the Hai City branch."
"Who knows? Maybe there's a reason. But that was a big case; the bonus must be substantial."
"True. But after this case, do you think they'll contact us to handle the soul retrieval at the hospital?"
"Hard to say. Even if they do, we'll have to wait in line—I've still got five pending requests."
"Tsk, I've got three..."
After hanging up, He Qi'an called Jing Yi directly. Since Lin Xiaoyan had met the man in his company's elevator, it was easy to handle. He didn't want to go through the bureaucratic red tape of the police; he just needed Jing Yi to pull the surveillance footage.
"Hello, look who finally has time to call me, the busy man."
Hearing Jing Yi's voice, He Qi'an got straight to the point, asking him to pull the elevator footage from the morning.
