Chapter 40: Sooner or Later It Will Be Yours
Chapter 40
Suddenly, a gust of north wind howled past, causing the soft carriage curtains to billow violently as if about to be torn apart.
Pei Yanzhou gazed coldly at Pei Jingxing, realizing something at that very moment.
Pei Jingxing felt a chill crawl down his spine under Pei Yanzhou's gaze. "What I said wasn't that harsh, was it? It's just the two of us here; I'm merely asking. What is Elder Brother trying to do?"
Pei Yanzhou had no time to be angry with him. With a calm demeanor, he asked, "If you would think this way, Third Aunt most likely would as well. Then tell me, would our cousin?"
His question seemed entirely disconnected from the context. Taken aback for a moment, Pei Jingxing let out an "Ah?" and asked, "Are you talking about our cousin?"

Yet, his expression quickly shifted to one of stern gravity as he countered, "Elder Brother, surely you aren't actually..."
"No," Pei Yanzhou glared at him. "A mere Chai family is not worth going to such elaborate lengths. Do you truly take me for that kind of person?"
Pei Jingxing pressed his lips together and remained silent.
One could never be too sure about such things.
If it wasn't Elder Brother, what about the Third Prince?
For all these years, he had always felt it rather peculiar that the Third Prince showed such extraordinary and unusual solicitude toward their cousin. He had brought it up twice before in front of his parents, but they both felt there was nothing amiss. Consequently, he stopped speaking of it to avoid inviting disaster with careless words and stirring up unnecessary trouble.
Seeing him remain silent...
