Chapter 13: Saving Private Robin
As the alarm blared, the entire military force stationed at the hospital sprang into action. Soldiers who had been sleeping soundly were abruptly awakened from their dreams, groggy and confused, hastily dressing and grabbing their weapons.
Clearly, the soldiers here differed greatly from those Robin had encountered before crossing over; they couldn’t keep their guns at their sides or assemble rapidly with such readiness.
About forty soldiers were currently engaged: ten stationed on the second and third floors, two at the hospital’s main entrance, three on the rooftop, two at the courtyard gate, and the rest patrolling inside the hospital.
Two squads had already moved inside to provide support, while another squad remained active outside.
As the soldiers entered the hospital lobby, four individuals emerged from the washrooms flanking the stairs, opening fire on the troops positioned in the central stairwell.
The soldiers reacted swiftly, suppressing the attackers with fire from both sides and forcing them back.
A squad leader shouted urgently, “Third squad, eliminate them! The rest push upwards!”
Leading his team decisively, he pressed forward, directing concentrated fire towards the washroom area.
The attackers were mere civilians, incapable of withstanding gunfire; they could only retreat into the washrooms, firing sporadically to delay the soldiers’ advance.
Between the first and second floors, resistance was also encountered. After some cost, the soldiers finally reached the second floor and charged towards the special care ward. Meanwhile, the man with his head lowered dealt with a security guard who had suddenly appeared.
Startled by the sudden appearance of a large number of soldiers, he quickly retreated back to Robin’s hospital room.
Though he was an extraordinary individual, ordinary superhumans only possessed slightly enhanced abilities compared to normal people—they had better physical fitness and higher potential, but were not immune to bullets.
These ordinary superhumans were more akin to martial artists, lacking strength against trained soldiers.
On the battlefield, Robin had once taken down two superhumans with his sniper rifle.
Under the enemy’s suppressive fire, the man with his head lowered dared not expose himself.
“We can’t stay here long. We must retreat quickly!” the woman urged anxiously.
“Where is Robin?” he asked.
“He’s been taken away.”
“We must kill him!” The man’s gaze hardened with resolve.
...
Seeing a group of doctors and nurses fleeing with a patient while having killed two soldiers, the rooftop soldiers immediately raised their weapons.
Bang! Bang!
Flames erupted from the muzzles as bullets from steam-powered sniper rifles streaked towards the fleeing group.
The nurse struck by a bullet gritted her teeth, stifling a groan.
Two more bullets hit her bulletproof vest.
Her armor was specially made—a superhuman artifact covering her body except for her head, neck, and hands.
Even so, the two sniper rounds shattered two of her ribs.
She staggered, digging deep pits in the muddy ground with her steps, blood spurting from her mouth, clearly suffering internal injuries.
The nurse pulling her felt the increased weight, gripping tighter to prevent her from falling.
---
Robin decisively raised his head, lifting the hand that held the gun.
Instantly, a profound connection surged through his veins.
Distance, wind speed, enemies...
A flood of data flashed through Robin’s mind, and he felt as if the entire world slowed down.
Everything seemed to turn black and white, while the soldiers upstairs glowed red and appeared magnified several times in size.
This wondrous sensation was something Robin had last experienced playing basketball in high school, a zone where every shot seemed destined to score.
Now, he had regained that feeling!
The soldiers upstairs fired down while watching the reactions below.
Besides two shooters, there was one man sounding the alarm.
The two soldiers suppressed from above instinctively recoiled when Robin raised his gun.
But—
Bang! Bang!
Robin fired two shots; both rooftop shooters were simultaneously struck in the head!
Initially, Robin was aiming at their chests, but as they retreated, their heads emerged—just as Robin had predicted!
His shots were so swift they had no time to fully hide behind cover.
The alarm-raiser watched helplessly as two vibrant soldiers turned into cold corpses.
“Don’t move!”
A squad arrived just in time, though still some distance away.
“Open fire! Shoot to kill!”
The squad leader ordered immediately.
They took their positions, unleashing a barrage of bullets towards Robin and his group.
“Get to the vehicle! Protect him!”
The wounded nurse flicked her delicate hand, pushing the nurse holding her forward.
“Merry!”
The other nurse’s face changed as she glanced back while running.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Countless bullets struck the wounded nurse, including one to the neck.
Despite her bulletproof vest, this deadly focused fire left her no chance.
“Hurry, go...”
The injured nurse glared fiercely at the other nurse.
The latter bit her lip, resisting reckless impulses, and kept running.
Robin glanced back at the nurse fallen to the ground, seeing the wound on her neck.
He instantly understood—she was beyond saving.
---
Battlefield-honed instincts warned him that attempting rescue would only endanger more lives.
“Don’t look back!”
Matthew, seeing his team member surrendering her life, felt heartache but could not stop.
Gritting his teeth, he commanded, “Get in the vehicle!”
Seeing his rescuer collapse, fury surged within Robin.
He leveled his gun at the shooters.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Four consecutive shots rang out.
Three soldiers and one squad leader were each shot through the head.
Robin wanted to continue firing, but his gun was empty.
Damn it—only six bullets?
The soldiers continued firing, but their bullets inexplicably veered away from Robin and his group, striking the fallen nurse instead.
She clung to her last breath, enduring both mental and physical agony, drawing the bullets’ attention.
The driver’s eyes were bloodshot as he yanked open the door and took the wheel.
Matthew grabbed Robin and the nurse, rushing them into the vehicle’s rear compartment.
At that moment, the man with his head lowered and his companion had just leapt down from the second floor.
Gunfire still echoed inside the hospital—Matthew’s team was clearly covering their retreat.
The ambulance roared, hurtling towards a wall.
With the hospital gates closed, the driver inexplicably chose to crash through the solid wall rather than the seemingly easier hospital entrance.
Crash!
The sturdy wall was forcibly pushed aside as the vehicle swung its rear and sped away.
Other soldiers were only now emerging from a smaller building.
The man with his head lowered and the woman felt a chill rush to their brains at the sight of so many new troops.
Bang! Bang!
Two of their ambushed men suddenly rose and furiously fired upon the soldiers.
Three soldiers were hit; the rest instinctively turned their guns.
Rat-a-tat-tat-tat...
The two attackers were riddled with bullets.
This gave the man and woman the chance they needed—they dashed towards the back of the building.
“Quick, get in the vehicle! Intercept them!”
