Chapter 57 Helpless Retreat
“I wanted to say…” Jiang Yang hesitated for a moment before speaking, “I wanted to ask, has your stomach condition improved?”
“Oh…” Su Muyun’s face showed a hint of disappointment. “That’s all you wanted to say?”
Before coming here, Jiang Yang’s tone over the phone had been gentle, saying he had something to tell her tonight, which had raised her expectations.
But after witnessing what had just happened, the words he wanted to say turned into something so bland.
At this moment, Jiang Yang suddenly recalled everything from that night at the bar after the recent shock.
Before Jiang Yang’s car accident caused his amnesia, the two of them had drunk quite a bit in a private room; both were slightly intoxicated.
Su Muyun rested her head on one hand, her cheeks flushed as she looked at Jiang Yang. “When will you apologize for slapping me?”
In truth, Jiang Yang’s slap had only grazed beside her cheek, barely touching her face before stopping. Not only that, she had slapped him back, yet always insisted that he was the one who hit her.
Later, Su Muyun often came to the bar to see him, using this incident as emotional leverage.
Jiang Yang said, “It’s impossible to apologize now. I never truly hit you. But if you were my wife, whatever you said would be right. Don’t talk about me apologizing—if you wanted me to kneel on a washboard, I’d accept it.”
Su Muyun chuckled softly. “You really talk big, huh? Can I buy the washboard first?”
At the time, Jiang Yang, a little drunk, half-joked, “Go ahead, you’re a big boss—what’s a washboard to you?”
Suddenly, Su Muyun stopped laughing. She stared at Jiang Yang for a moment, hooked one arm around his neck, and slowly leaned her lips toward his.
She was an irresistible woman. Jiang Yang’s breathing quickened; they could clearly feel each other’s breath.
Just as their lips were less than ten centimeters apart, the door was knocked.
Ruined the moment, Su Muyun asked displeased, “Who is it?”
A man’s voice came from outside: “I’m here with the fruit platter.”
Su Muyun wanted to send him away immediately, but the man opened the door without waiting. He was indeed carrying a fruit platter, but with a sharp fruit knife placed on it.
She instinctively felt something was wrong. Fruit platters delivered to private rooms were usually pre-cut, with only small forks or toothpicks. Why would there be a fruit knife?
But her suspicion came too late. The waiter had just set down the platter before suddenly lunging at her with the fruit knife.
In that instant, Jiang Yang’s mind went blank, and he instinctively stepped in front of Su Muyun to protect her.
Unfortunately, he had no training in close combat. The waiter’s knife plunged into his chest.
Luckily, Su Muyun reacted quickly, pulling him back in time, so the knife only left a shallow wound.
She immediately grabbed a bottle from the table and smashed it on the waiter’s head, cracking his skull.
The loud noise drew Wei Jiahao from outside to rush in. The waiter, realizing he couldn’t succeed, tried to escape but was subdued by Su Muyun’s men.
Wei Jiahao took the man away. What happened to him afterward, Jiang Yang didn’t know, but the chill down his spine and the lingering fear told him how close he’d come to death.
If the stab had been deeper, his life might have ended then and there.
That night, Jiang Yang’s intoxication vanished. He realized that being with Su Muyun meant constantly facing such dangers.
If he died, what would Sister Chunmei do?
“Are you alright? Should I take you to the hospital?” Su Muyun ignored the attacker and focused on Jiang Yang.
Seeing the blood seeping through his white shirt caused her deep pain. He was just an ordinary man who had saved her twice.
“I’m fine, just a minor scratch. I’ll take care of it myself later,” Jiang Yang waved her off, gently pushing her hand away.
That gesture pained her. They had just been intimate moments ago, and now he was so distant.
Reluctantly, she said, “Then let me take you home.”
“No need. I can go back on my own. You should deal with that attacker first,” Jiang Yang instinctively wanted to keep his distance.
A heavy sadness weighed on Su Muyun’s heart. She understood his thoughts clearly. Perhaps there was no future for them.
What made Jiang Yang endearing was his genuine and realistic nature.
He liked money, maybe even liked Su Muyun, but he valued his life.
He and she, a woman who flirted with danger, did not live in the same world.
They spoke little after that. Jiang Yang clutched his chest and left on his own.
That night, she transferred one million to Jiang Yang for medical expenses.
He only accepted six hundred thousand and returned the remaining four hundred thousand, saying six hundred thousand was enough to pay off his debts.
He also said that once the debts were cleared, he would resign from Melody Harbor and stop working as a nightclub model.
Su Muyun didn’t push. She knew Jiang Yang’s character well. Maybe she could force him to stay for a night or two to relieve the emptiness she’d felt over the years, but binding him to her forever was unlikely.
Yet she didn’t want to let go. Later, she spent money to buy Melody Harbor simply because Jiang Yang had once said he liked that bar.
Then, Jiang Yang’s car accident and subsequent amnesia gave their relationship a chance to restart. But tonight, because of the sudden arrival of Peng Lao Er, that chance might be snatched away again.
Su Muyun took Jiang Yang’s hand and said, “I’m feeling better, but not fully recovered yet. I haven’t eaten any porridge. How about… you come upstairs and feed me?”
Jiang Yang took a slight step back, “You look much better today. That’s enough to put my mind at ease.”
His subtle movement made Su Muyun's heart sink. A similar situation had happened before, after which Jiang Yang began avoiding her.
Tentatively, she asked, “Why don’t you stay here tonight and keep me company a little longer?”
“No, I have things to do at the company tomorrow. I won’t disturb your rest,” Jiang Yang said as he turned to leave.
“Stop!” Su Muyun hurried to block his way, biting her lip. “What’s the point of your lousy company that earns you a few thousand a month with all the busyness?
Stay tonight and keep me company. Tomorrow, I’ll just buy the whole company for you.”
Jiang Yang’s lips twitched. “Sorry, the company’s already been sold.”
“Sold?” Su Muyun hadn’t yet grasped what he meant when Jiang Yang swiftly left the villa, leaving her in utter confusion.
Outside on the road, Peng Lao Er lit a cigarette and made a call.
A woman’s melodious voice answered, “How did it go?”
“Boss Wang, I did as you said. Got scolded by Su Muyun and even got shot,” he replied.
The woman on the other end laughed brightly, “You’re still fine and talking, aren’t you?”
