Ouyang Qian continued, “Just tell them you’re the child’s father too. This is also a wonderful opportunity to teach the children to stand up against bullying. That way, I think any parent will be able to understand.”

Jiang Yang was taken aback. Was their relationship really escalating this quickly? They had not even officially started dating, and they were already discussing raising children.

Still, he had to admit that Ouyang Qian was right. Only by presenting himself as her husband and visiting together would they appear sincere.

Although calling himself her “husband” felt rather abrupt, they needed to resolve the crisis in front of them, and there was no time to worry about such details.

After a brief hesitation, Jiang Yang said, “All right. Send me the contact information for those students and their parents. I’ll get in touch with them first and tell them we’ll come by this evening.”

“Okay, I’ll send it right away. Tonight, I’ll have a friend pick Feifei up and take her home. I’ll come find you after work.”

After hanging up, Ouyang Qian quickly sent Jiang Yang the contact information of several class leaders, along with a few students whose parents she thought would be easier to reason with.

Once the messages had been sent, a strange feeling suddenly stirred in her heart. As the ancients said, who could know whether a setback might not turn out to be a blessing in disguise? Perhaps there was some truth to it after all.

Did this not mean that Jiang Yang would be acknowledging himself as her husband in front of one parent after another?

The information Ouyang Qian sent included the contact details of five families.

Jiang Yang wasted no time. He contacted the parents one by one, introducing himself as Ouyang Qian’s husband.

Naturally, all of those parents had seen the news that day, and they had originally wanted to avoid the matter as much as possible.

Two of them refused outright, insisting that it would be best not to involve their children.

Jiang Yang could understand that. After all, people nowadays generally believed that it was better to avoid unnecessary trouble. He could hardly force them.

The other three parents were not entirely in favor of the idea either. Fortunately, they seemed fairly reasonable and all believed that Ouyang Qian was innocent.

Thus, when Jiang Yang said that he and Ouyang Qian would visit them that evening, they eventually agreed, albeit hesitantly.

When the workday ended, Ouyang Qian drove over to pick up Jiang Yang. In order to save time, they bought a little food at a convenience store and then began their evening of home visits to the three families.

All three families were fairly respectable. They had probably enjoyed a good relationship with Ouyang Qian before, and even after she became embroiled in such an incident, they remained warm toward her.

However, persuading them was no easy task. After a long discussion with Jiang Yang, the families and their children finally agreed to help by mobilizing other students to testify against the bullies at school.

By the time they left the last family’s home, it was already ten o’clock at night.

Before they left, the child’s mother saw them downstairs. She gave Ouyang Qian an envious look. “Teacher Ouyang, I’m so envious that you have such a wonderful husband.”

Ouyang Qian’s pretty face flushed. She was too embarrassed to tell the woman that Jiang Yang was actually a fake husband she had hired with money. Nevertheless, she asked, “What makes him so wonderful?”

“He’s handsome, and he’s genuinely dependable. Something this serious happens, and he immediately comes up with a solution. If it were my husband, he would probably have panicked and lost his head long ago.”

The compliment put Ouyang Qian in an excellent mood. She slipped her arm tightly through Jiang Yang’s and said, “Honey, look. She’s praising you.”

The corner of Jiang Yang’s mouth twitched. “After being trained for a thousand days, one must be ready to serve when called upon. Isn’t a man supposed to be dependable at times like this? It’s only natural.”

“I can only say that Teacher Ouyang has an excellent eye for men,” the mother praised again.

After bidding the woman farewell, the two of them got back into the car. Ouyang Qian suddenly burst into laughter, her whole body trembling with amusement.

Jiang Yang turned to her in bewilderment. “What are you laughing at?”

“What you just said.”

“What did I say?”

“You said that after being trained for a thousand days, one must be ready to serve when called upon.”

“What’s so funny about that?”

Suppressing her laughter, Ouyang Qian said, “Who said I was going to train you? You’re getting ahead of yourself.”

“It was just an analogy. I have a job. It’s not as if I really need you to support me.”

As she fastened her seat belt, Ouyang Qian replied, “I never said I wouldn’t.”

Jiang Yang did not respond. Instead, he said seriously, “Our original plan was to find five children to help us. Now we only have three. I don’t know whether that will be enough.”

Knowing that he was deliberately changing the subject, Ouyang Qian gave him a long, complicated look. “If it isn’t enough, then this is all we can do. Still, one of the children has an older brother in fifth grade, and it seems the students bullying our class are in fifth grade too. If we can get his brother to help, the results might be quite good.”

Jiang Yang pondered this. “The children alone probably won’t be enough. Tomorrow, go visit the injured students. After that, we’ll need to find a few independent media outlets to follow the development of the incident and stir up some discussion online.”

Ouyang Qian nodded and picked up her phone, tapping at it for a while.

Jiang Yang heard a soft chime from his phone. When he picked it up, he saw that Ouyang Qian had transferred him fifty thousand yuan.

Ouyang Qian put her phone back into her bag. “Finding independent media outlets will cost money. If that isn’t enough, tell me.”

Jiang Yang’s eyes widened. “It can’t possibly cost that much to contact a few media outlets. Do you have more money than you know what to do with?”

“You’ve been helping me all afternoon. I can’t let you do all that work for nothing. Besides…”

“Besides what?”

“Nothing.” Ouyang Qian pressed her lips together and said no more as she started the car.

What she was thinking was: Besides, I don’t want there to be any distinction between us. If you’re my husband, then isn’t my money your money too?

Jiang Yang did not object. Since the money had been sent to him, he might as well accept it.

Now that they had found a way to deal with the matter, Ouyang Qian seemed to be in a somewhat better mood. She played light music as they drove and occasionally joked with Jiang Yang.

She drove him all the way to the entrance of Sunshine Apartments. By then, it was already eleven o’clock at night.

She parked by the roadside and looked up at the apartment building. “You’ll be all alone when you go back. Why don’t you come home with me? You can even take Feifei to school tomorrow morning.”

Jiang Yang gave a bitter smile. If she knew that he had once had a wife for more than half a month, he wondered what she would think.

“It’s too late tonight. Maybe next time. There’s a new general manager coming to the company tomorrow, so I need to get a good night’s rest and be ready to deal with him.”

“Oh, right. You were busy handling my problems all day, and I forgot to congratulate you. You’ve even been promoted to head of the design department.”

Jiang Yang recalled the way Chen Hao and Liu Yingying had treated him that day, and felt somewhat uncomfortable. “Don’t congratulate me yet. Wait until I’ve settled into the position first.”

Cao Ling had kept talking about the new general manager, saying he looked like a movie star. Jiang Yang wondered what kind of person he would turn out to be.
