Ruolan’s words felt like a switch being flipped, making Jiang Yang suddenly breathe faster. He settled into a comfortable position on the bed, brought his phone close, ready to claim his reward.

“How is it? Are you done?” Ruolan seemed just as impatient as he was.

With a seductive smile, she pressed her finger against her tempting red lips, then slowly slid it down along her mouth to her snow-white neck. Her fingernails were painted a bright color, like a guiding light pointing the way.

Jiang Yang’s gaze was completely captivated by this beacon; his heartbeat quickened. Her finger continued to glide down over the thin, diaphanous nightgown, tracing the magnificent expanse of her valley.

The scene was breathtaking—just watching it through the screen made Jiang Yang feel a fierce fire ignite within him. The flame began in his lower abdomen and rapidly spread through his entire body.

As the guiding light moved toward her lower abdomen, about to reach the most beautiful part below, a sudden knocking interrupted the video.

Ruolan’s expression stiffened. She abruptly stopped, looking toward the door.

“Ruolan, open up,” a woman’s urging voice came from outside, the knocking growing more insistent.

She looked flustered. “No, the reward will have to wait for another day. I have to log off now.”

Jiang Yang, stoked to feverish heat, felt as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over him from head to toe. His mouth twitched. “Wait, who is at the door?”

“I’m not telling you. Just remember to take your medicine. Good night.” With a blown kiss to Jiang Yang, the screen went black, leaving him alone in the dark, disheveled by the wind.

Who had ruined his remote pleasure? Judging by the voice, it sounded like a middle-aged woman. Hadn’t Ruolan gone home already? If he wasn’t mistaken, it must be his mother-in-law.

But if it was her own mother, why was she so flustered? Even if that sheer nightgown was too alluring and being caught was embarrassing, it shouldn’t be so panic-stricken.

On the other end of the line, Wang Ruolan hurriedly slipped on a large nightgown before opening the door.

Outside stood a middle-aged woman, about fifty years old. Though aged, she still possessed charm, clearly once a striking beauty with an elegant temperament.

Jiang Yang’s guess was correct—this woman was none other than Wang Ruolan’s mother, Chen Wenqin.

“Mom, what’s the matter?” Ruolan tightened the oversized nightgown around her.

Chen Wenqin’s face was clouded with worry. “Ruolan, your father and I have talked. You can’t go on like this. We’ve arranged for you to see a psychologist.”

Ruolan’s expression darkened. “Mom, I told you, there’s nothing wrong with me. Why do I need a psychologist?”

Chen Wenqin glanced at the computer screen in the room, her worry deepening. “Look at what you’re doing now, and you still say you’re fine?”

Ruolan struggled to control her emotions and spoke softly, “Mom… I’m fine. I love my husband, and he loves me. When our relationship stabilizes, I’ll bring him to meet you.”

Chen Wenqin frowned even more, staring at the screen. “If you like him, why not court him normally? Your father and I won’t oppose it. Our family has money; you have looks and figure. Why resort to these methods?”

Those words felt like a knife piercing Ruolan’s heart.

Her eyes suddenly widened. Grasping Chen Wenqin’s hand tightly, her chest heaved, and her hands trembled. “Mom, please don’t say that anymore. Do you want to see that happen again?”

The woman who had appeared as a goddess to Jiang Yang just moments ago was now contorted with anguish, unrecognizable.

Her fingernails dug deep into Chen Wenqin’s wrist, drawing a bead of blood.

Chen Wenqin winced from the pain. Seeing her daughter on the verge of losing control hurt her more than the physical sting.

Perhaps those past events truly should never be mentioned again.

She gently stroked Ruolan’s shoulders. “Alright, alright… my precious daughter, your father and I can’t interfere with your affairs, but promise me, don’t do anything reckless, okay?”

Ruolan’s trembling subsided slightly at her mother’s words, her expression softening, though her whole body still quivered. “Mom, you and Dad can rest assured. I love him so much—I definitely won’t do anything to hurt him.”

Chen Wenqin glanced once more at the screen, took a deep breath, and said, “I believe you. Also, your father has already arranged what needs to be done. Tomorrow, you should go handle the paperwork.”

Tears welled in Wang Ruolan’s eyes as she stepped forward and embraced Chen Wenqin. “Mom, I know you both only want what’s best for me. I love you.”

Chen Wenqin patted her back, but her gaze remained fixed on the computer screen. “I’m going to sleep now. Don’t stay up too late.” With that, she closed the door and left.

Once the door shut, Ruolan hastily wiped away her tears and rushed back to the computer.

Her laptop screen displayed nothing remarkable—just a map of S City, with an orange dot moving across it.

She watched anxiously as the dot slowly approached Sunshine Apartments, finally stopping in front of the building and entering inside.

Only then did she relax a little and pick up her phone to call Jiang Yang again. Her finger hovered over the screen but then froze.

She fought the restlessness inside and told herself: No, no, no. Men mustn’t be pursued too tightly; if you cling too much, you risk losing him.

Yes, yes, absolutely mustn’t chase too hard!

But there was another thing she could do.

She moved the mouse and opened another program. Seeing the cluster of new images pop up on the screen, a satisfied smile spread across her face.

That evening, after washing up, Jiang Yang took his usual red pill.

It was Ruolan’s instruction—he had to take it daily, or his headaches would flare up easily.

The pill he’d brought to the company was taken away by Yang Xiaoran’s assistant, Xiao Zhao, so he had to take one at night.

After swallowing the pill, he lay on the bed, habitually reaching for the empty spot beside him. Without Ruolan there, he truly felt out of place.

Beyond missing her, his feelings for her had grown more complicated.

Her words at Yang Xiaoran’s clinic echoed in his ears: “Is it possible that even you yourself never really knew her?”
