Volume One, Chapter 9: What Did You Say My Master Is?!

Lin Hongye instinctively glanced at the treasured sword and immediately recognized its extraordinary nature. In her previous life, she was none other than the Empress of the Jade Pool, having witnessed countless divine weapons, yet she had never seen a weapon quite like this.
“What... what kind of weapon is this? Even without approaching it, one can sense the murderous aura it exudes,” Lin Hongye said in shock. Lin Yang then explained, “This is the Chiyang Immortal Sword, passed down from Chiyang Peak. Since you’re going on a mission, you may take this sword and wield it.”
Lin Yang was no master of the sword himself; at most, he could swing the Chiyang Immortal Sword a couple of times. But Lin Hongye was different—not only was she skilled in swordsmanship, but more importantly, she possessed the Phoenix Immortal Body. The phoenix is a fire element; the karmic fire power of the Chiyang Immortal Sword complements her perfectly, elevating her strength to a whole new level.
“Master, do you mean... you’re bestowing this Immortal Sword upon me?” Lin Hongye’s breath grew heavy. After all, the Chiyang Immortal Sword was a genuine celestial blade. Even the Fuyao Divine Sword she wielded in her past life could not compare to it. Although she was not a swordsmanship prodigy, the alignment of her immortal body and the sword’s attributes guaranteed she could unleash formidable power.
Just as Lin Hongye fantasized about wielding the sword to conquer all, Lin Yang tapped her on the head, pulling her back to reality. “What are you daydreaming about? I’m just lending it to you for use. Once you’re done, return it to me.”
Hearing this, Lin Hongye felt a pang of disappointment, but being allowed to use an Immortal Sword even once was enough. “Thank you, Master.” She then drew the Chiyang Immortal Sword from the ground.
Immediately, the karmic fire power and pure killing intent of the sword began to seep into her body. Lin Hongye could withstand the karmic fire—after all, as a Phoenix Immortal Body, she was tolerant of fire attribute damage. But the sword’s pure killing intent almost clouded her mind. Though her will was stronger than ordinary people’s, her current strength was too low to fully control the sword.
Seeing this, Lin Yang tossed her the scabbard. “Alright, it seems you still can’t endure the sword’s power. For now, put the sword back in this scabbard. When you truly need to use it, draw it out again.”
Lin Hongye hurriedly sheathed the Chiyang Immortal Sword; the killing intent and karmic fire power immediately receded, easing her discomfort. “Thank you, Master.”

Now she understood why Lin Yang wouldn’t hand over the Chiyang Immortal Sword to her outright. It wasn’t that her master was unwilling, but that her strength was too low to control the sword properly. If given to her, she would be ensnared by the sword’s killing intent, turning into something neither fully human nor ghost.
Understanding Lin Yang’s intention, she bowed respectfully and thanked him again. “Thank you, Master. I understand your meaning.”
Lin Yang was momentarily baffled. His intention? He had no grand design—he’d merely given her a scabbard. But no one likes to have their motives undermined, so he cleared his throat and feigned profundity. “Exactly. It’s enough that you understand my intention.”
“Enough talk. Go. I’ll wait for your return at Chiyang Peak.”
Lin Yang waved his hand and turned away. Lin Hongye watched his retreating figure, determination flashing in her eyes. “I will not disappoint Master!”
With that, she turned and left the great hall, descending from Chiyang Peak. Meanwhile, Lin Yang stroked his chin, murmuring, “I wonder if besides cultivation and the Dao, I can learn anything else from Lin Hongye.”
...
Lin Hongye arrived at the task hall at the foot of the mountain. The disciples there who were taking missions glanced at her in surprise. “Isn’t that Lin Hongye, this year’s top disciple? She’s quite beautiful.”
“Not only beautiful, she broke through to the Golden Core stage immediately after joining. That strange phenomenon on Chiyang Peak the other day was summoned by her.”
“Probably the future sect leader. We should show her some respect. That sword she's carrying... is that the Chiyang Immortal Sword from Chiyang Peak?”
“Must be. Didn’t expect that useless peak master to actually invest so much, giving such a precious sword to Lin Hongye.”
Lin Hongye paid no mind to the murmurs around her. She was already tired of hearing countless voices of envy and resentment along her journey.
But when she heard the words “useless peak master,” her previously calm heart rippled faintly.
“Whoosh!”
With the sound of the sword being drawn, Lin Hongye pointed the tip of the Chiyang Immortal Sword at the disciple who had called Lin Yang useless.
“What did you call my master?!”
Killing intent slowly surged in her eyes, enveloping the entire task hall.

Though she knew Lin Yang was far from useless, hearing others insult him still hurt.
The disciple, having never encountered such a display, was instantly terrified.
“I’m useless! I’m useless! How dare I insult Peak Master Lin?! I’m sorry!”
The disciple begged for mercy, no choice but to plead as the karmic fire power on the sword’s blade nearly seared him.
Seeing the disciple wisely admit his mistake, Lin Hongye nodded and sheathed the Chiyang Immortal Sword.
“Remember this: if I hear such words again, it won’t be so simple.”
With that, she approached the dazed elder in charge of the task hall and said, “I want to accept a mission.”
The elder snapped back to attention upon hearing her voice and hurriedly said, “The missions are listed on the board over there. Go pick whichever you want.”
Lin Hongye nodded and walked over to the board to choose.
Meanwhile, the elder muttered strange words under his breath, looking puzzled. “Since when did the Chiyang Immortal Sword gain such power? The last Chiyang Peak master’s use of it was nowhere near this formidable.”
He glanced at the Chiyang Immortal Sword at Lin Hongye’s waist and sighed. “Oh well, it must be that Lin Yang has been nurturing the sword often, which explains the surge in its power.”
“Unexpectedly, though his cultivation is lacking, he shows some talent in tempering sword artifacts…”
“Elder, I’ve prepared it,” Lin Hongye’s voice interrupted his thoughts.
The elder looked down at the token in her hand and his face changed immediately. “No! That mission is too dangerous! You cannot take it!”
Lin Hongye frowned, looking at the mission token. “Is there any mission that isn’t dangerous? I’m taking this one.”
“Listen to me, young lady. You’re only a Golden Core cultivator, and you want to slay a Nascent Soul-level demon beast? That’s sheer madness.”
