Chapter Thirty-Two: A Desperate Battle, Breaking the Deadlock
I held the secret letter, my brow furrowed so tightly I could have crushed a fly. The code was like an ancient, undecipherable script; it gave me a splitting headache. Fortunately, I knew an old scholar well-versed in classical texts; decoding such things was child's play for him.
After some tinkering, the scholar slapped his thigh and shouted excitedly, "It's done! This letter hides a massive secret!"
It turned out that this mysterious force had been lurking behind the palace, orchestrating various conspiracies. Their leader was a figure deeply hidden, keeping even the Emperor in the dark. Good heavens, how bold—daring to challenge the heavens themselves!
Yunsheng and I exchanged a look, both of us seeing a blazing fighting spirit in the other's eyes. Hmph, don't mistake our silence for weakness! We had to take the initiative and drag this mastermind into the light.
We devised a meticulous plan, ready to catch them off guard. To our surprise, however, the mysterious figure seemed to have a sixth sense, knowing our move in advance! On the way to his lair, we encountered layers of ambushes—it was even harder than the pilgrimage in Journey to the West!
"Watch out!" Yunsheng shoved me aside just as a poisoned arrow whistled past my ear, embedding itself in the tree trunk behind him. I gasped; had that struck me, I would have died on the spot.
"Yunsheng, are you alright?" I hurriedly checked his injuries. Fortunately, it was only a scrape, and he wasn't poisoned. But seeing him hurt made my heart ache like it was being sliced by a knife. This guy was always putting himself in harm's way to protect me.
After a fierce battle, we finally reached the mastermind's den. He sat on a high throne, looking down on the world, waving a feathered fan as if he were some transcendent sage.
"You've come," he said, a cold sneer tugging at his lips. "Overestimating yourselves. Did you think you could stop me? My plan is nearly complete, and you..."
"Shut up!" I interrupted. "Stop with the mystique! Who do you think you are? The Jade Emperor? Let me tell you, your time is up today!"
Yunsheng stepped forward, his gaze sharp as he stared him down. "Your crimes are countless! Today, we are here to rid the world of a scourge!"
The mysterious man burst into laughter, as if he had heard the greatest joke in the world. "Just you two? How ridiculous! Men!"
No sooner had he spoken than a group of black-clad figures swarmed in from all directions. They looked ferocious, like the grim reapers themselves. With a display like this, one might have thought they were filming a historical epic.
"Yunsheng, back-to-back! Protect your little purse!" I shouted while drawing the dagger hidden in my sleeve. Don't let my usual gentle appearance fool you—when it comes to a fight, I can be ruthless!
These men in black were indeed skilled, their every move meant to kill, and Yunsheng and I were caught off guard at first. However, as the saying goes, two fists are no match for four hands—and one good man can't fight a crowd. We worked in perfect sync: I observed the enemies' weaknesses, and Yunsheng delivered precise strikes. Soon, the attackers began to falter.
Strangely enough, I discovered I could sense both where treasure was hidden and where a person's weaknesses lay, as if I were naturally attuned to such things.
I whispered to Yunsheng, "The one on the left, his chest! The one on the right, his knees!" Yunsheng understood immediately, striking at the vital points. The men in black groaned in agony, falling into chaos.
Just then, Minister Zhao arrived with a squad of men. My heart sank—surely he had come to aid the mastermind! It seemed we were done for...
Wait, what was happening? Why were Minister Zhao's men attacking the black-clad figures?
I was utterly bewildered. Had I transmigrated into a parallel world?
"Minister Zhao, what is the meaning of this?" the mastermind roared.
Minister Zhao sneered. "What is the meaning of this? I'm here for revenge! You old fox, to think you dared to use me!"
It turned out Minister Zhao had long since discovered the mastermind's plot and had been biding his time, waiting for this moment to strike back. What a cunning, long-sighted man!
Taking advantage of the chaos, Yunsheng lunged at the mastermind, and the two began to grapple. Although young, Yunsheng had a solid foundation in martial arts, and with my occasional guidance, the mastermind gradually lost his footing. Finally, Yunsheng unleashed his ultimate move, slamming the villain to the ground with a single palm strike.
"It's over," Yunsheng said, standing over him, looking down with cold authority.
The mastermind's plot was thoroughly shattered, and he was sentenced to severe punishment by the Emperor. The officials who had colluded with him were also brought down—it was truly gratifying!
Because of our great contribution, Yunsheng and I were rewarded by the Emperor, and for a time, we basked in immense glory. However, palace intrigue is never-ending. We had only just begun to enjoy the joy of victory when...
A black shadow flickered by, and the jade pendant in my hand... was gone.
