Chapter Twenty-Seven: The Astonishing Power of Telekinesis
"Let me try! Maybe it will work! Who knows until they try?"
Wen Yue still held high hopes for the Object Manipulation Technique; at the very least, shifting an enemy's position should be achievable. Of course, she was currently experimenting on mundane beasts; she would have to test it on spirit beasts later to be sure.
Wen Yue walked up the mountain with Little Gold-Silk. The animals they encountered were merely ordinary creatures, but Wen Yue didn't mind. If an animal was large enough, she would use the Object Manipulation Technique to see if she could move it.
Stopping and starting as they went, they soon reached the mountainside. Their luck was decent; no sooner had they arrived than they encountered a Level 2 Qi Refining Snow Spirit Rabbit. Its defining features were that it was whiter and more beautiful than a common rabbit, with little eyes that sparkled like gemstones.
"You want to do it, or should I?" Wen Yue asked Little Gold-Silk.
"You do it! It's not even worth a single lash from me," Little Gold-Silk replied dismissively.
"Fine! Watch me."
The two communicated via telepathy; although they exchanged words, it happened in an instant. Wen Yue cast the Object Manipulation Technique, and the Snow Spirit Rabbit appeared right before her eyes. Realizing something was wrong, the rabbit scrambled to run away. Wen Yue cast the spell again, but this time, it missed.
"Ah! Why didn't it work?" Little Gold-Silk asked.
"It’s not the spell's fault; the rabbit is just too fast. My spell didn't even land on it, so what use would the effect have?"
Wen Yue understood. It seemed the Object Manipulation Technique worked on both mundane and spirit beasts; it was just that her aim against moving targets was poor. She simply needed more practice.
"Even if it works on spirit beasts, you can only move your prey around. If you can't hurt them, what's the point?" Little Gold-Silk didn't understand why her master insisted on practicing this spell.
"It's useful! If I can't defeat a target and its claws are about to strike me, I can cast the spell to change its direction. Doesn't that give me a chance to escape?" Wen Yue explained.
"I think you should practice some lethal spells instead. That should be the ultimate goal, right? Master, are you afraid?" Little Gold-Silk shared a psychic bond with Wen Yue and could vaguely sense her internal state.
"Yes, even you can tell. I am indeed avoiding it. I just feel that no matter how wicked others are, it shouldn't be my place to punish them. I am very reluctant to stain my hands with blood. I understand that this is a world of cultivation where the strong prey on the weak, and a moment's carelessness can cost me my life. That is why I practice so hard—to ensure no one can threaten me."
This was truly the influence of her past life; she held a sense of awe and respect for all life and was unwilling to easily decide the fate of others. The matter with Niu Hongtian was exactly like that. No matter how many excuses she made to herself, she could not deny her reluctance to take a life.
"Master, I will protect you. If you don't want to kill, I will do it for you. I personally think bad people deserve to die; I don't like the look of them anyway," Little Gold-Silk said affectionately.
"Thank you, Little Gold-Silk, but that won't be necessary. I will overcome my own issues. I just haven't quite adjusted my mindset yet."
"I'll protect you regardless, Master."
"You're so tiny, who could you possibly protect?" Wen Yue looked at Little Gold-Silk, who was smaller than her palm, and felt a warmth in her heart.
"Don't underestimate me." As she spoke, she suddenly whipped out a vine, coiling it around a Level 2 Qi Refining porcupine that had tried to ambush them.
The captured porcupine squealed, "Aow, aow!" Little Gold-Silk asked, "Master, do you want this?"
"Sure! It's pork, after all!" She waved her hand and stored it in her storage space.
"Master, is this delicious?" Little Gold-Silk asked.
"It is! Pork is the best." Wen Yue’s mouth watered. Since arriving in this strange world, she hadn't eaten pork many times. In the past, her family was too poor to afford meat. Since starting her cultivation, she was lucky to have anything containing spiritual energy; there was no room for pickiness.
"Then let's hurry and catch a few more. I saw earlier that the porcupine you mentioned came from over there. Let's go take a look," Little Gold-Silk suggested.
"Alright!"
Pigs were herd animals; there were sure to be more nearby. The two crept forward and saw several porcupines rooting for food on the ground, both large and small.
"Little Gold-Silk, leave the small ones."
"Oh! Then I'll take these five big ones." Little Gold-Silk didn't ask why.
"Can you handle it? These are all Level 2 Qi Refining strength."
"I can! Watch me perform."
"Okay! I'll step aside." Wen Yue walked behind a large tree to hide and watched how Little Gold-Silk would show off her power; she knew Little Gold-Silk would be safe regardless.
Once Wen Yue was out of sight, Little Gold-Silk flew lightly to a large tree and took root, though she did not drain the tree's nutrients.
Then, her vines grew wildly, slithering along the forest floor until they reached the porcupines. Each porcupine had a vine waiting near it. Seizing the moment, all five vines shot forward, wrapping around the porcupines' necks. Simultaneously, adventitious roots sprouted from the vines and pierced the porcupines' necks. In an instant, the five porcupines lost their lives, and along with their lives, all their nutrients were drained.
Wen Yue was deeply shocked by this scene and stood speechless for a long time. No wonder Ao Qing kept insisting that Little Gold-Silk was formidable; now she understood how "formidable" was defined.
"Little Gold-Silk, are you alright?" Wen Yue feared that Little Gold-Silk had used such a powerful move that it might have side effects, leaving her drained immediately after.
"Master, was I impressive?" Little Gold-Silk’s excited voice echoed.
"Little Gold-Silk, do you feel any discomfort?" Wen Yue was like an overly anxious nanny, caring more about the child's well-being than her abilities.
"What could possibly happen to me? I feel great! I feel like I'm about to advance to the fourth level." With that, she took flight and circled the forest excitedly.
Watching the energetic Little Gold-Silk, Wen Yue went to inspect the prey. She touched one gently, and the porcupine instantly crumbled into dust.
Wen Yue’s eyes widened in shock. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. What kind of power was this?
Refusing to believe it, she went to check the other porcupines. From the outside, they looked like ordinary, lifeless prey, but upon touching them, they crumbled into dust just the same.
"Little Gold-Silk, come here and take a look," Wen Yue transmitted to her. She wasn't upset about the lost prey; she just wanted to understand what had happened.
"What's wrong, Master?" Little Gold-Silk flew over from afar.
"What is the meaning of this?" Wen Yue pointed to the pile of dust. Was Little Gold-Silk truly this strong? She had drained all the nutrients from the porcupines entirely.
"Oh! Sorry, I used too much force. Master, your prey is gone," Little Gold-Silk said in frustration.
"That doesn't matter; if it's gone, we can just catch more. But are you sure you're okay?" Wen Yue asked again.
