Volume One, Chapter 46: She Simply Loves High-Profile Cases
Lin Xiaoxu, who had been watching the surveillance footage all along, clenched his jaw muscles with a twitching grimace, his gaze icy and filled with murderous intent. Since the cameras hadn’t captured Li Donghai committing any crime, it was highly likely that Li Donghai would once again escape unscathed, just like seven years ago.
A thought, utterly opposed to the law, flashed fleetingly through Lin Xiaoxu’s mind...
At that moment, Ge Ruoshuang and several police officers requested to inspect the scene inside the medicine storage room.
Zhu Liu led the way, instructing the staff of Jishitang Pharmacy to temporarily close the shop. If they couldn’t catch the insider who had stolen the wild ginseng today, he had no intention of continuing business.
The remaining customers showed no sign of leaving either. Their curiosity was piqued, eager to discover who the real culprit was. After Zhu Liu’s approval, they all followed into the backyard’s medicine storage room.
“Oh no, my herbs!”
As soon as Zhu Liu entered and glanced at the shelves, his face instantly paled as if smeared with white lime.
“Boss Zhu, what’s happened?” Ge Ruoshuang asked.
“My Lingzhi mushrooms, Polygonum multiflorum, deer antlers, and cordyceps! They’ve all been swapped for cheap imitations!” Zhu Liu pounded his thigh fiercely and burst into tears on the spot. “These are precious medicinal herbs worth over a million yuan!”
A barely perceptible hint of delight flickered across Ge Ruoshuang’s face.
She had just been transferred to Jinchang County yesterday, and today, a major case had already occurred!
A subtle smile curved her lips, her tongue sliding along the inside of her mouth. She thrived on big cases—without them, she wouldn’t even take the job! How else could she have made a name for herself at such a young age?
Ge Ruoshuang spoke up. “There are indeed many people coming in and out of the pharmacy, but very few have access to the medicine storage room.
“In the intact surveillance footage available, only three individuals can be clearly seen entering and leaving the storage room to retrieve herbs.”
Li Donghai’s palms were sweating coldly, yet his expression remained calm and composed.
Zhu Liu’s mood soon recovered, and he explained, “Although Jishitang has over twenty employees, only three people have access authority to the storage room—myself, Li Donghai, and Uncle Rong.”
There were two iron doors and two cameras guarding the medicine storage room, with only these three authorized to enter. From a security standpoint, it was fairly secure.
Upon hearing his name, Uncle Rong’s body tensed instinctively before he hurried over to Zhu Liu, stammering, “Boss, it wasn’t me… I’m willing to cooperate with the investigation…”
Uncle Rong’s face was pale and drenched in sweat, his words faltering.
The herbs stored within Jishitang were carefully selected premium goods of considerable value.
Especially the wild ginseng—it was said that Zhu Liu had paid over 100,000 yuan to buy it from an elderly farmer.
As the owner, Zhu Liu naturally wouldn’t have swapped the wild ginseng himself. Thus, the prime suspects narrowed down to Uncle Rong and Li Donghai.
Uncle Rong, flustered, almost forgot he didn’t have the safe’s key. How could he have swapped the wild ginseng then?
“Everyone, at this point, there’s something I must say!” Li Donghai suddenly interjected.
His brows furrowed deeply, a look of difficulty flickering in his eyes. Gritting his teeth, he glanced briefly at Uncle Rong and Zhu Liu before turning seriously to the officers.
“A few days ago, I saw Uncle Rong carrying two bottles of Maotai.”
Wow!
Maotai!
Even those who had never tasted baijiu had surely heard of Maotai’s name!
Maotai was China’s most renowned baijiu brand, with a starting price of 1,499 yuan per bottle.
But that price was only for those lucky enough to snatch it up; ordinary buyers had little chance. Usually, retail prices started at over 3,000 yuan per bottle!
Uncle Rong was just an old employee at Jishitang with a monthly salary under 4,000 yuan. One bottle of Maotai costing over 3,000 yuan was nearly a whole month’s wages for him. Li Donghai said he saw Uncle Rong carrying two bottles!
Two bottles valued at over 7,000 yuan—if someone had gifted them to Uncle Rong, it might be plausible.
But Uncle Rong was an ordinary man with no power or influence; how likely was that?
Uncle Rong was petrified on the spot!
Then he regained his composure and angrily retorted, “Li Donghai, don’t slander me! When and where did I ever carry two bottles of Maotai?”
Qi Xiangfu glanced at Zhu Liu in slight surprise, but Zhu Liu returned a particularly calm look.
Li Donghai wore an innocent expression and replied, “Uncle Rong, it wasn’t you, why are you panicking?
“Yesterday after work, I did see you from afar carrying two bottles of Maotai into a car.
“I’m just telling the truth in front of the officers.
“Maybe I was mistaken. You earn less than 4,000 yuan a month—how could you afford Maotai, let alone two bottles?”
Li Donghai was cunning and sly, truly an old fox!
He only claimed to have seen Uncle Rong carrying two bottles of Maotai from a distance, then added the possibility of error at the end.
This vague statement was like looking through a fog—unclear and misleading. By planting doubt, he created a smokescreen.
His words shifted Zhu Liu’s and the officers’ attention onto Uncle Rong.
It would take over half a month to thoroughly investigate Uncle Rong and his entire family of seven or eight.
If during the investigation, they found assets or bank transactions inconsistent with their income, the time required would be even longer.
This was exactly what Li Donghai wanted!
By the time Zhu Liu and the officers recovered from their suspicions about Uncle Rong, Li Donghai’s own suspicions would be impossible to verify!
“If there’s no solid evidence against me at the moment, how could they possibly charge me in the future?
“It’s the same as that idiot Lin Xiaoxu just now, publicly exposing his own misdeeds from back then, hahahaha...” Li Donghai muttered to himself with a trace of triumphant delight, his hazel eyes gradually darkening.
