“Don’t move! Put your hands up!”
The moment Lin Xiaoxu stepped out of the vehicle, several figures in police uniforms sprang out from all directions.
They twisted his arms behind his back and expertly fastened a pair of silvery handcuffs around his wrists, then kicked him behind the knees.
A faint, mocking smile appeared on Lin Xiaoxu’s face.
They were slow as snails, yet somehow still managed to put handcuffs on him. But what was the point of kicking him behind the knees?
What kind of ridiculous procedure was this?
A potbellied officer kicked the backs of Lin Xiaoxu’s knees several times. When he saw that Lin Xiaoxu not only refused to kneel but stood as straight and rigid as a wooden post, his expression darkened.
“May I ask what crime I’ve committed?”
“We received an anonymous report claiming that you stole a three-wheeled motorcycle. We are taking you back to the station in accordance with the law for a thorough interrogation.”
Shen Yulian, wrapped in a thick coat, came hurrying out of the main room, her face deathly pale.
As an ordinary, respectable woman, she was genuinely terrified of those uniforms.
Seeing several officers holding Lin Xiaoxu with his arms twisted behind him, she felt the world spin before her eyes. Her legs went limp like overcooked noodles, and she nearly collapsed onto the ground.
The scene before her filled Shen Yulian with a fear unlike anything she had ever experienced.
A rustling of footsteps approached. It turned out that Wu Deshun had brought a crowd of villagers over.
“Are you really going to take me back to the station based solely on one anonymous phone call? Isn’t that a little too childish?”
The moment Lin Xiaoxu finished speaking, a villager called out, “We’ve worked the land all our lives and still ride old bicycles. How could a fool like him ride such a fine three-wheeled motorcycle unless he stole it?”
“Exactly! His family is so poor they haven’t eaten meat in two or three months. How could he possibly afford a three-wheeled motorcycle costing several thousand yuan?”
“Either he stole it or he robbed someone.”
Wu Deshun had brought the villagers there for one reason: to make them witness Lin Xiaoxu, the alleged vehicle thief, being taken away by the police, thereby avenging the humiliation of having Lin Xiaoxu shove his backside into his face the other day.
At the same time, he wanted to push Shen Yulian—a woman who had first married a gambling addict and then remarried a fool who was also a vehicle thief—into the center of public ridicule, leaving her too ashamed to remain in the village.
Once she had nowhere else to turn, she would come begging him for help.
And when that happened, he could do whatever he wanted with her.
Listening to the villagers condemn Lin Xiaoxu, Wu Deshun felt immensely pleased.

Among the crowd, Lin Manru was beside herself with anxiety.
She had already begun to suspect the previous night that there was something wrong with the source of Lin Xiaoxu’s three-wheeled motorcycle.
Even if he had sold both sacks of guavas, he could at most have earned several hundred yuan. There was no way he could have afforded a three-wheeled motorcycle costing several thousand.
Even so, she still trusted Xiaoxu’s character. There had to be some misunderstanding, and she silently prayed for him.
Liu Shulan was equally uneasy.
The officers certainly would not have come all the way to Peach Blossom Village to arrest someone based on a single anonymous report. They had rules and procedures to follow.
Peach Blossom Village was notorious for its poverty.
Apart from the village chief’s family and Lin Manru’s family, no one else owned a motorcycle. Most villagers got around on bicycles and the like.
On top of that, Lin Xiaoxu was not particularly bright. He had traded away all the family’s farmland to marry a twice-married woman, leaving himself more than seventy thousand yuan in debt to the villagers.
He had gone to the county seat and returned with a three-wheeled motorcycle. Faced with all these suspicious circumstances, they had concluded that Lin Xiaoxu was highly likely to have stolen it.
“Lin Xiaoxu, confession brings leniency, while resistance brings severity!
“If you honestly admit to stealing the vehicle, you’ll only be detained for a few days, and that will be the end of it.
“But if you stubbornly refuse to confess, you could be facing a sentence of several months—or even one or two years.”
Lin Xiaoxu rolled his eyes.
These idiots hadn’t even bothered to look at the two large signs fixed to the front and rear of the three-wheeled motorcycle, each clearly marked with the name of the dealership along with its sales telephone number and address.
Were they blind, or simply too arrogant to lower their eyes?
If Lin Xiaoxu had truly stolen the motorcycle from the dealership, the owner would have reported it long ago.
Yet these officers had come swaggering all the way to Peach Blossom Village to arrest him, despite the dealership owner never having filed a report, all because of some supposed anonymous tip.
It was utterly absurd!
“I bought this with my own money, and I have the receipt. Let me go first, and I’ll show it to you.”
After hesitating for more than ten seconds, the officers finally decided to unlock Lin Xiaoxu’s handcuffs.
Lin Xiaoxu casually shook his wrists a few times, then retrieved a receipt from the locked compartment beneath the motorcycle’s driver’s seat and handed it to them.
The potbellied officer took it with a doubtful expression, picked up his phone, and dialed the number printed on the receipt.
“Hello, this is Peace Vehicle Dealership.”

“I’m a police officer. I’d like to ask whether a man named Lin Xiaoxu purchased a three-wheeled motorcycle from your dealership yesterday afternoon.”
“I’m not sure what the man’s name was, but a young man did come to my dealership yesterday afternoon and spend 5,998 yuan on a three-wheeled motorcycle…”
The dealership owner gave a detailed account and even said that he could provide surveillance footage if necessary.
After the potbellied officer hung up, his expression became unusually solemn. He muttered, “According to the dealership owner, Lin Xiaoxu really did purchase this three-wheeled motorcycle with his own money.”
Wu Deshun and the villagers exchanged bewildered glances.
“That only proves you didn’t steal the vehicle. Where, then, did you get nearly six thousand yuan?”
Money obtained through improper means was a far more serious matter than vehicle theft.
He could easily end up spending several years in prison.
“This is the contact number of Song Qingxin, the owner of the Qingxin Fruit Shop, who bought my guavas.”
Lin Xiaoxu held up the slip of paper Song Qingxin had given him that day.
The potbellied officer dialed the number again.
A little over a minute later, he hung up and said, “The owner of Qingxin Fruit Shop, Song Qingxin, has confirmed that Lin Xiaoxu sold guavas at the agricultural market yesterday afternoon and earned more than six thousand yuan.”
What?!
Those guavas growing on the back mountain, which usually rotted on the ground because no one wanted to eat them, had actually sold for more than six thousand yuan?
Had the people in the county never eaten guavas in their previous lives, or were they simply fools with money to burn?
Wu Deshun felt a tightness in his chest, while the villagers stood stunned and speechless.
The officers remained rooted to the spot like wooden posts. They exchanged glances, their eyes darting about, and the minute changes in their expressions revealed the trace of greed hidden in their hearts.
Lin Xiaoxu caught it all. A trace of barely perceptible contempt flashed through his eyes.
