Chapter Eighty-Five: They Wanted an Extra Match
When his mind power entered the man’s head, his gaze went blank in an instant, and then he began to roll wildly across the arena like a madman.
The pain of mental force invading the head was not something ordinary people could endure. It was as if a thousand knives were twisting inside his skull, as though they meant to shred every last thing within his brain.
Gu Xiaoyao watched coldly as he rolled on the ground. She bent to pick up the short blade from below, then looked down at Tang Zhong with a half-smile.
“Why are you still standing there? Aren’t you going to announce the result?”
The referee from Dagu Village was so frightened by the screaming man on the arena that he froze. At Gu Xiaoyao’s icy tone, he instinctively looked toward Tang Zhong.
“What, you mean to cheat?” Gu Xiaoyao said with open sarcasm.
The people from Lotus Village heard that Dagu Village might be trying to renege, and immediately rushed up onto the arena, standing high above the others and glaring down at the people below.
“Announce the result already! What are you standing there for? We’ve already won three matches. This one is ours too.”
“That’s right. Are you trying to go back on your word? Let me tell you, if you dare, you’ll learn your lesson. Our Lotus Village is not to be trifled with.”
Tang Zhong did want to renege, but he still had to think about saving face.
By the end of the competition, it was no longer only the people from the two villages present; even villagers from nearby places had come to watch the excitement.
“You fool, hurry up and announce it.” Tang Zhong roared at the referee.
The stunned referee quickly nodded, then declared, “There are five matches in all. Lotus Village has won three. In this competition... Lotus Village is the victor.”
As soon as the announcement fell, the people of Lotus Village erupted in cheers, while the people of Dagu Village looked as bitter and miserable as if they were attending a funeral.
What they had believed to be an easy victory had turned into a shocking reversal. Not only had they lost, they had also lost several fine stretches of land.
“Sister-in-law, you were truly amazing! You just went and knocked them all down with such a bang!”
Dahua was so excited she hardly knew what to say. She had originally been ready to rush in if her sister-in-law lost.
In terms of brute strength, she could always manage to knock down one person, but she had never expected her sister-in-law to dominate the whole match so completely.
“Not bad. Village Chief, please go ask Dagu Village’s chief to bring over the land deeds. We’ve won.”
After stepping down from the arena, Gu Xiaoyao was already thinking about the plots they had won.
When Old Village Chief Chu heard her, he cheerfully agreed and, leaning on his cane, made his way to Tang Zhong.
“Village Chief Tang, we’ve won. Shouldn’t you hand over the land deeds now?”
Tang Zhong rose from the bench, his eyes fixed on Gu Xiaoyao like a serpent’s. With a false smile, he replied, “The land can be handed over, but I want another match. I truly never expected your village to have produced such a formidable woman.”
“I would also like to learn a thing or two. Rest assured, I won’t let you fight for nothing. I can even give you another plot of land.”
Dagu Village had plenty of land, so the terms Tang Zhong offered were very generous.
Besides, in Dagu Village, Tang Zhong’s word was practically law. Even if the villagers were dissatisfied, they would only dare mutter to themselves.
“What? No more fighting? No, no, hurry up and bring out the land deeds. We still need to get back to the village!”
Old Village Chief Chu was not nearly so greedy. He felt it was enough to keep their own land and get back some of what had been lost.
If they grew any greedier, they might end up losing even the land they had won, along with their own. Old Chu was cautious by nature and dared not gamble.
“That won’t do. You win and then want to leave? Since when is there such a thing? If you refuse, then I’m afraid those land deeds will have to wait a while longer before I hand them over.”
A cruel smile appeared on Tang Zhong’s fierce face as he slowly rolled up his sleeves, speaking like a shameless rogue.
