When Gu Xiaoyao saw that the man still had not abandoned his shameless intentions and was trying to shift closer, she turned a cold gaze on him.
“What are you looking at? What, am I not allowed to move over a little? This space is so cramped that I’m being squeezed.”
Seeing Gu Xiaoyao’s expression, the man glared back without the slightest hint of shame. Then he brazenly shifted closer.
The people on the ox cart seemed to realize that something was wrong. Ordinarily, when faced with this sort of incident, everyone preferred to muddle through it quietly.
The lecher had a remarkably thick skin, but the young woman’s was thin. She did not want this matter to become gossip for the others.
“There’s plenty of room here. How much space do you think you need? You only paid a single copper coin. Why not just hire the whole cart?”
“Exactly. If you have money, why don’t you buy your own ox cart instead of stopping ours? We’re all human beings—do you think your backside is bigger than mine?”
A sturdy woman glared at the man as he tried to edge his way over, convinced that he was deliberately causing trouble.
Gu Xiaoyao was surprised to see that everyone on the cart who understood right from wrong had united to reprimand him.
“What? Just because I don’t have money, I’m not allowed to ride an ox cart? I’ll squeeze and move wherever I please. If you have the nerve, hit me!”
The man was stubborn by nature. The moment he saw the women criticizing him, he deliberately pressed closer, both hands continuing to grope about.

Several women felt hands touching their bodies and cried out in fright. Seeing that they were afraid, the man burst into loud laughter.
“Are you insane? In broad daylight, you dare do such a thing! Is there something wrong with your head?”
The sturdy woman raised the basket of vegetables in her hand and smashed it against the man’s head. No one would tolerate such behavior.
“Bah! With those few pounds of greasy flesh on your bodies, who would want to touch you? You really think you’re heavenly beauties? I’m trying to touch someone else.”
The man cast a lecherous look at the young woman beside Gu Xiaoyao. From his expression, it was obvious whom he had wanted to grope.
Gu Xiaoyao pulled the young woman to her side. When she saw him reaching over shamelessly, she extended a hand and shoved him backward.
The man lost his footing. With a loud crash, he was pushed off the cart. The road in those days was not paved with concrete; it was covered in stones.
His back struck the gravel, and the tiny stones dug into him with excruciating pain. Stars burst before his eyes.
“Damn your mother! You worthless little bitch, how dare you refuse the face I’ve given you? You really think you’re somebody, don’t you? If I don’t beat you up today, you won’t even know what you are!”
The fall had jolted his pride awake. With so many people watching, if he did not roll up his sleeves and fight, everyone would take him for a coward.
Somebody urged the driver to hurry and get the ox cart moving, unwilling to linger beside the madman.

“Hurry and drive the cart away! That sort of person is trouble. Look at his flushed face—he probably intends to chase after us and start a fight!”
The driver could only laugh and cry inwardly. He had merely wanted to earn a little pocket money. How had things come to this?
When Gu Xiaoyao saw that the man still dared to come after her, she leaped down from the ox cart. She held a basket in one hand and a stool in the other.
“Do you truly want to fight, or will you turn around now and pretend this never happened?”
The man had run all the way there despite the pain in his back. Naturally, he had no intention of retreating. He spat on the ground.
“If I turn around and leave now, I’ll be a pig. Come on, hit me if you dare. I’d like to see how capable you really are.”
In every era, there were always people who begged to be beaten with their mouths. Gu Xiaoyao was not surprised in the least. She seized the stool and swung it at him.
