Chapter 118: The Bean Sprout Just Peeks Its Tiny Tip

By the time Gu Xiaoyao’s plant-based supernatural power had passed over the ten troughs, the soybeans scattered across the soil had already sent out tender little shoots.
Gu Xiaoyao did not dare force the soybeans to grow too quickly, but she could at least help them survive this bitterly cold weather.
These soybeans, transformed by her supernatural power, were completely unafraid of the current climate. They would sprout and grow as though it were spring.
Forcing them to grow outright would certainly be effective, but sooner or later, someone would notice.
“For now, this will do.”
Gu Xiaoyao muttered to herself, then quickly locked the door of the storage shed.
Apart from its wooden door, the shed had no other entrance. Even the window was too small for anyone to squeeze through.
Because she had not been served any food that evening, Madam Liu was still cursing and grumbling inside the house. She felt she had given birth to two sons for nothing.
Those two heartless wretches had not cared in the least that their own mother had gone hungry. Right before her eyes, they had eaten every last bit of the good food.
“Why did I give birth to two ungrateful brats like you? You’re trying to tear my heart out! All you care about is filling your own bellies. Do you even regard me as your mother?”
Chu Qingsong and Chu Qingbai acted as though they had heard nothing. Lying on the kang bed, they remained as still as dead pigs.
When Madam Liu saw that they would not even turn their heads, she angrily picked up a pillow and hurled it at them, all the while cursing in a shrill voice.

Sleeping in the room next door, Gu Xiaoyao was rather surprised when she heard the three of them quarreling over the food. She had thought she would need to add a little more fuel to the fire.
Like mother, like sons. It seemed Madam Liu had truly been hurt by her two boys. Perhaps she had never imagined that they would treat her this way.
“Chu Chengjin, when will your injury heal?”
Once he recovered, he would be able to help with the work. There was still plenty to be done in the fields.
Chu Chengjin had been lying on his side, but when he heard her question, he turned toward her. In the darkness, his eyes fixed on the profile of Gu Xiaoyao’s face.
“What is it? Is my wife getting impatient? Don’t worry. Once I’m healed, I will surely spend a passionate night with you.”
Hmph, hmph!
Hearing those words, Gu Xiaoyao merely snorted inwardly twice. Did he think that saying such things would make her blush and curl up shyly?
“If my husband truly has that in mind, I do have a good solution. Why don’t you simply lie still while I take the initiative?”
After hearing this, Chu Chengjin fell completely silent. He did not utter another word for a long time—so long, in fact, that Gu Xiaoyao eventually fell asleep.
Early the next morning, the village chief arrived at the gate of Gu Xiaoyao’s courtyard with several men. When they saw her come out, they smiled awkwardly.
“Chengjin’s wife, I’ve come to fulfill the promise I made last time. These men all have some free time and will help you.”
The previous day, the village chief had summoned the men who had taken part in the competition and persuaded them to honor their commitment.
A true man kept his word. Since they had promised to help, they could not go back on it. That would hardly be manly.
“Thank you, Chief, but you won’t need to help for long. One morning will be enough. After all, the people in my household aren’t very efficient at getting things done.”
Gu Xiaoyao understood the ways of human relationships. If she asked them to come and help every day, they would surely grow resentful.
But if they only had to help for one morning, they would not have so many reservations.
“All right, all right. Don’t worry, Chengjin’s wife. We’ll certainly do a proper job for you.”
“That’s right. Don’t worry. After one morning’s work, we’ll surely be able to dig up quite a bit of land.”
The men who had come to help were overjoyed when they heard that they would only be needed for one morning. They could not help laughing aloud.

The main reason was that the village chief had gathered the men who had participated in the competition the day before and managed to win them over.
