Gu Xiaoyao easily carried two sacks of soybeans to the agreed meeting place. She had no idea where Chu Chengjin had gone.

When she reached the rendezvous point outside the city, she saw Big Flower kicking pebbles restlessly. The moment Big Flower spotted her, she waved excitedly.

“Sister-in-law, over here! Did you buy everything? What are you carrying? Let me take it. Don’t tire yourself out.”

When Big Flower saw that the sacks were filled entirely with soybeans, she was rather puzzled. Why had she bought so many?

“Sister-in-law, you needed soybeans? You should have told me. We have soybeans at home—several sacks that we haven’t finished yet!”

Every household in Lotus Village stored large quantities of dried goods that could be kept for a long time, so soybeans were a staple in every home.

“I’m going to make something and sell it at the market. I walked around the market earlier and found that there are people who regularly buy wild game, and their prices are quite good. When we have time, let’s go into the mountains again.”

The last time she had exhausted her supernatural ability, Gu Xiaoyao had suffered quite a bit. But her ability had grown stronger since then, so dealing with powerful beasts should be easier this time.

“All right. But we probably won’t be able to go for the next few days. I still have to help my family with the work. Once we’ve finished digging the wasteland, we can go.”

Hunting was important, but working the land was important too. After all, they needed land if they wanted to grow food.

Besides, entering the mountains did not guarantee that they would find prey. Last time, the two of them had simply been lucky: they had managed to hunt a wild boar and escape from a tiger’s jaws.

“All right. Once the time is settled, I’ll tell you. Let’s sit here for a while. Chu Chengjin still hasn’t arrived.”

The two of them sat side by side on the cold stone. Meanwhile, the Chu Chengjin whom Gu Xiaoyao had mentioned was sitting in a private room by the window of a teahouse, drinking tea.

“Young Master, you have to think of something. I finally understand what it means for a hero to be defeated by a single coin.”

The burly man across from him was so anxious that even his tea had lost its flavor. They were truly so poor that they could barely afford clothes.

Seeing that the man was so worried he looked ready to break out in blisters, Chu Chengjin lowered his head and slowly turned the teacup in his hand.

“Panicking won’t help. Money doesn’t grow on trees. If you’re truly short of funds, you can borrow some.”

Chu Chengjin remained perfectly calm in such situations, for this was not the first time something like this had happened.

Their development had advanced too quickly, while the money in their pockets had failed to keep pace. That was how they had ended up in this predicament.

“Young Master, I’d gladly borrow some, but no one will lend to me now. They simply refuse!”

The burly man looked ready to burst into tears. A man of seven feet, he had been reduced to bending his back for a measure of rice. It was truly miserable.

Seeing how close he was to crying, Chu Chengjin thought for a moment, then agreed to take care of the matter.

“Understood. I’ll deal with it once my injuries have healed.”

The burly man was so grateful he seemed ready to soar into the heavens. He rose, bowed deeply to Chu Chengjin in thanks, and then dashed out of the teahouse.

He had no money and could not afford to pay the tea bill.

Chu Chengjin remained in the teahouse and touched the few coins in his purse. He beckoned the waiter over and whispered a few words to him.

The waiter soon hurried out, while another attendant kept watch over Chu Chengjin as he continued drinking his tea.

When Gu Xiaoyao arrived, she saw Chu Chengjin sitting there with an air of effortless elegance, calmly sipping his tea. Upon seeing her, he even revealed a warm, refined smile.

“My wife, I’m out of money.”

Gu Xiaoyao let out a helpless sigh, took out her purse, and paid the tea bill.

The attendants standing nearby looked at Chu Chengjin with expressions that clearly said: Impressive. He actually lives off his wife.
