This marksmanship is full of mercy.
“Surely it can’t be this serious?”
Chen Sheng stared blankly ahead at the utility pole, where a sheet of paper featuring his photo was posted. Yet, it wasn’t a missing person notice or a lost property announcement—it was a reward bulletin from the City Police Department.
Moreover, aside from this pole, nearly every twenty meters along his line of sight, he saw another one just like it.
“I’ve only been off the game for a few days, and now I’m wanted?”
“And judging by the reward, it’s not exactly small!”
Chen Sheng was dumbstruck. This so-called healing game was full of absurd twists! First, it abruptly erased his companion, a plot device so bleak it could depress anyone in a second. Now, it turned around and declared the ‘player’ wanted. Could any legitimate game do this?
Certainly not.
So, this healing game was anything but proper.
It was as if life had become too hard; you couldn’t go on, nor could I. From being industrious people, we’d become lost souls.
Chen Sheng grumbled inwardly as he approached the pole, wanting to see exactly how much the reward was. The notice was printed in black and white, rather crudely, so the reward amount was blurred and impossible to read from afar.
“A reward of seventeen hundred dollars…”
“That’s quite a bit!”
His eyebrows rose. The game’s monetary system was unlike any other—not only did it avoid absurdly large numbers, but the amounts were scaled down significantly.
In this city of Shangsanjiang, being a police officer was considered a fine job, one of the best choices for the lower rung of society.
It was dignified work, with good benefits and opportunities for advancement.
If luck was on your side, you might even land a small official post.
An intern at the City Police Department earned five hundred dollars a month, and after becoming official, another three hundred were added, totaling eight hundred. To break a thousand a month, one must be promoted to a mid-level officer!
If that was the case for police officers, ordinary citizens in Shangsanjiang fared even worse.
Seventeen hundred dollars amounted to nearly half a year’s income for many.
“I need to see what charges they’ve pinned on me to make me so valuable,” Chen Sheng mused. He scrutinized the notice, only to discover that no crime was listed.
“They’re hunting me without stating the charge? I ought to grab a gun and shoot them up!”
Instantly, Chen Sheng was furious.
No crime listed meant the charges were fabricated.
How could anyone tolerate such baseless accusations?
This was absolutely intolerable!
So Chen Sheng did exactly as he thought.
Due to the frequent strange incidents, Shangsanjiang was far from peaceful. As a result, the city had become a haven for all sorts of arms dealers; any kind of weapon, hot or cold, could be bought for a price.
There were even weapons reserved for the City Police Department.
Chen Sheng didn’t possess any of the game’s currency, so he hadn’t planned to buy a gun—instead, he simply “borrowed” from an arms dealer.
He moved so swiftly that before the dealer could react, all their guns and ammunition had vanished.
“Where’s my gun?”
One arms dealer in a certain district of Shangsanjiang cried out in terror. He was about to make a deal, but a sudden gust of wind swept through, and his case disappeared from his hands.
He glanced around; it was pitch dark, the only light coming from a distant street lamp.
No sound except the breath of his own people.
The dealer’s scalp prickled; he swallowed hard and decided not to pursue the missing firearms. “Let’s go!”
Then he turned and fled.
Meanwhile, now armed, Chen Sheng arrived at the City Police Department’s entrance.
He didn’t sneak around, but strode in openly and confidently.
Familiar with the layout and seeing that few people were present at this hour, Chen Sheng made a circuit without being noticed.
This made him realize he’d come to the wrong place and dampened his urge to start shooting indiscriminately.
“Every grievance has its cause, every debt its payer. I need to find the person who ordered my arrest if I want revenge; otherwise, wouldn’t I just be killing the innocent?” he muttered, as if this were his true motivation, rather than the fact that even if he tore down the department, he’d gain no experience points.
When monsters gave lots of experience, even small roadside creatures were valuable!
But if there was no experience, or too little, then not even the biggest boss was worth hunting.
With this mindset, Chen Sheng made his way to Uncle Yan Shidong’s residence—a brightly lit mansion, where a lively party seemed underway.
Looking at the scene, Chen Sheng fell into deep thought.
“I suddenly remember, I seem to have a brother here, a true friend!”
“Would storming in be a bit disrespectful to him?”
“But… nobody’s offering me more money for restraint!”
At this, Chen Sheng abandoned his hesitation. He raised his gun, didn’t bother to aim, and pulled the trigger.
It was a weapon resembling a Gatling gun.
As tongues of fire spat forth, the roar echoed, and bullets poured out in a torrent.
In an instant, the mansion’s main doors were blown apart.
Inside, people scattered in terror, frantically searching for places to hide.
Chen Sheng’s shooting style was all about skimming the edges; even with a Gatling, not a single person was hit. The bullets swept past them, embodying the Buddha’s compassion to the utmost degree.
In ancient times, sweeping the floor might harm even an ant; now, wielding a gun might endanger innocent lives.
Soon, Chen Sheng had exhausted all the stolen ammunition, leaving him dissatisfied. So he decided to borrow from the arms dealer again.
As the saying goes, familiarity breeds ease, so Chen Sheng returned to the dealer he’d met before.
Having done it once, the second time was even smoother.
However, this time, Chen Sheng couldn’t continue to embody the Buddha’s compassion. As he passed a shop, someone inside happened to turn on the television.
Instantly, a force pulled him in, and in a daze, Chen Sheng found himself in a black-and-white world.
The Realm of the Dead.
Instinctively, Chen Sheng looked around, and saw a small figure standing before him.
“Master?”
It was the little ghost girl who had taken over the Li family villa.
Seeing Chen Sheng, she was overwhelmed with excitement.
“Uwu, this summoning really worked, it’s wonderful!” She hugged Chen Sheng… well, his leg.
Hearing this, Chen Sheng immediately understood why he had suddenly appeared in the Realm of the Dead.
He lifted the little ghost girl in one hand, swung her back and forth to calm her down, then asked, “Master, did you summon me for something urgent? If not, your disciple still has revenge to take!”
“It’s urgent, very urgent!” Though not pleased at being swung around, the little ghost girl had no time to complain.
