122. Once again, the non-existent game designer takes the blame.
Although Chen Sheng was puzzled by the frequent absence of Lu Jinsheng, the Lord of "Gourmet City," he had come to realize that the "equipment quest" he had deduced this time was, in all likelihood, another trap.
"Those developers are truly as heartless as ever!"
"But really, is such a scam of a quest supposed to be fun?"
After grumbling inwardly, Chen Sheng looked toward the young ghost girl beside him. She was staring blankly at the chest of ghost copper coins, looking as stiff and motionless as a wooden statue. Clearly, she had been completely stunned by the sheer volume of wealth.
As a "Fourth Calamity" player, Chen Sheng could not grasp the emotional state of an "NPC" in this regard. However, he tried to put himself in her shoes. For instance, if he were looking at a chest filled with real-world currency, he found himself entirely indifferent. His heart remained as still as an ancient well.
"Is it because after acquiring my second transformation form, my desire for material things has diminished? Or is it that my subconscious knows this is merely a false illusion?"
Chen Sheng was perplexed, but that didn't stop him from feeling a sense of disdain for the little ghost girl. He called over the two ghosts dressed as security guards, told them to watch the chest, and brought the girl inside.
The girl finally snapped out of her daze and asked with immense excitement, "Where are we going?"
"To check the vault."
"My lord..." the voice of the building—which resembled a bank—trembled, clearly panicked by Chen Sheng's sudden intrusion.
"I'll handle this myself. It's too slow to have you move things out," Chen Sheng said, using this as a cover for his true objective: to use the vault to give the little girl a visual shock. After all, coveting the bank just to steal a few coins was beneath his dignity as her guiding light. It wasn't just a matter of having no vision; it was a total lack of ambition!
"Very well, my lord!" Realizing he wasn't there to cause trouble, the building-turned-bank cheered up, constantly calling out directions for Chen Sheng and the girl. Before long, they reached the vault.
The vault door stood wide open. Chen Sheng walked in and saw that the entire space was filled with ghost copper coins. They were piled haphazardly on the floor, resembling sand dunes in a desert.
"These coins were just delivered, so they haven't been organized yet," the voice that had been guiding them spoke up again. Chen Sheng gave a slight nod; he didn't care why the money was piled so messily.
He looked at the little ghost girl. She had gone catatonic again, but a few seconds later, she seemed to lose all self-control. She rushed into the vault, screaming and jumping around on top of the piles of coins. Watching this, Chen Sheng wasn't surprised, but he couldn't help but sigh—those developers were truly meticulous. In the real world, someone suddenly seeing such a vast fortune would often experience similar emotional breakdowns—crying, laughing, or rolling around in the money. Some unlucky souls might even go insane. Although the girl looked foolish, her reaction was quite consistent with human behavior.
Knowing that the City Lord was away and that his deduced quest was likely a trap, Chen Sheng lost interest. He waited until the girl had finished her outburst and regained her composure before speaking. "Apprentice, don't be too happy yet. You can fill your pockets here, but how much can you actually carry back?"
"Master, hehe, Master, hehe..." The girl laughed. She seemed lost in thought, calling out to him and giggling to herself repeatedly, which made Chen Sheng's eye twitch. Why was she acting so strange? If their genders were reversed, this scene would look like a lecherous master trying to take advantage of his cute little apprentice!
"What are you trying to say?" Chen Sheng asked.
Seeing Chen Sheng's stern expression, the girl jumped and hurried to explain: "This bank looks large, but it actually evolved from a small residential plot. 'Perfect' attribute plots have unique evolutionary effects, far beyond those created from projected 'foundations.' Once this plot evolved to its peak and became this bank, it lost its residential status. But it also means this bank can now be loaded onto a 'Perfect' attribute residential plot..."
Chen Sheng immediately understood. She meant she could use her own "residential plot" to take the entire bank with her!
"Then why didn't you say so earlier?" Chen Sheng was stunned. With such an effect, why had this girl only thought of stealing a few coins? Even with the restriction of needing a "Perfect" plot, she could have at least imagined it! After all, this NPC was supposed to be a sophisticated, fully-fleshed-out intelligence.
"Because before this, I always thought there were very few coins in the bank..." the girl said, looking embarrassed.
Chen Sheng: "???"
Few coins? Was this NPC missing a line of code during her creation to be spouting such nonsense?
"Why would you think that?" Chen Sheng asked, speechless.
"Because I always heard them say the bank wasn't a big deal and that only weaklings came here. So, I thought about it—even I could only earn a few coins, and I'm not considered weak among ghosts, so... so..." The girl stammered, unable to finish.
Chen Sheng remained silent, his mouth twitching. The developers of this healing game were truly getting bolder and more twisted by the day.
"What's wrong?" the girl asked, looking at him.
"Nothing. Go ahead and move the bank," Chen Sheng waved his hand.
The girl immediately started running toward the entrance. Chen Sheng felt a spark of interest and quickly followed. "To load the bank onto your plot, do we need to leave first?"
"No need!" The girl turned back to look at him, her pale, gray face full of confusion, as if wondering why he would ask such a thing.
"Then why are you running outside?"
"There's still a chest of ghost coins out there!" the girl said, pointing toward the bank's front entrance.
Chen Sheng: "..."
